Varicose Vein Removal
Transform believe it is everyone’s right to look and
feel great. We all want to
achieve a look of smooth, unblemished skin on our face and
body, and unsightly veins are certainly not part of that look!
There are different types of veins, easily recognisable by whether
their colour and whether they are raised or
not.
A newer treatment for larger varicose veins involves laser surgery
and is offered Transform. During a consultation with a consultant
vascular surgeon you will undergo an examination of your veins and
a test called an ultrasound.
This test uses ultrasound to look at the blood flowing through
your veins and diagnoses the cause of your varicose veins. Most
patients will be suitable for laser surgery on their veins called
Endovenous Laser Ablation (EVLA).
EVLA uses laser energy to seal the vein from the inside,
stopping blood flowing the wrong way down the leg and removing the
cause of the varicose veins. The operation is done under local
anaesthetic.
During the procedure, the laser fibre is passed up the leg from
a tiny needle hole at the level of the knee. The laser fibre is
then positioned in the superficial vein by ultrasound guidance and
local anaesthetic is given. The laser fibre is then activated and
withdrawn slowly to completely seal the vein.
After the laser treatment the leg is put in compression
stocking. Patients can walk immediately after the procedure and are
discharged home the same day. EVLA offers some advantages over
traditional surgery in that it may be done under local anaesthetic,
causes less pain and discomfort, less bruising, involves no
surgical incisions and allows a quicker recovery.
EVLA also offers some advantages over injection treatment for
varicose veins that may sometime cause excessive pigmentation.

Varicose Vein Removal FAQs
Who will varicose vein removal benefit?
If you have varicose veins on your legs that cause discomfort or
embarrassment and lack of confidence, then call us or use our
online form to discuss your specific
requirements at a free consultation.
How is varicose vein removal done?
There are three different ways to remove varicose veins.
Sclerotherapy is a treatment for minor or superficial veins on the
body, and involves a solution being introduced into the tiny vein
that collapses the capillary wall, causing the vein to disappear.
Sclerotherapy is used to treat spider veins. Avulsion technique
describes the surgical process of the affected veins being lifted
out. Stripping technique, used to treat more serious varicose
veins, describes the surgical process of pulling the veins out.
Avulsion technique and stripping are used to treat varicose
veins.
How long will varicose vein removal take?
Slerotherapy requires local anaesthetic (you will be conscious
with the area numbed) and the patient can go home the same day.
Avulsion technique also requires local anaesthetic and the patient
needn’t stay overnight. Striping is more serious and therefore
requires an overnight stay it the comfortable surroundings of a
Transform hospital. Find your local Transform
clinic here.
What results can I expect from varicose vein removal?
Dependant on the severity of your veins and the technique used
to remove them, you can expect different results – all procedures
will leave you with face and / or legs that are either completely
spider or varicose vein free or a reduced presence of unsightly
veins. If the varicose veins are extensive, multiple sessions may
be required to rid the area. Top-up sessions may also be required
if the veins reappear. Browse the before and
after pictures of vein removal to see some great results.
How long is the recovery period from varicose vein
removal?
After Slerotherapy, some redness may appear and soreness may be
present for a few days. With the avulsion technique and stripping,
a full leg bandage is required for 7 days. Leg support is needed
for a further month.
After sclerotherapy, you can resume limited normal
activity immeadiately . It's important to keep active in order to
keep the blood flowing. Normal activity, like walking, light bike
riding, is recommended.
Don't overdo it though.
Are there any after effects to having varicose vein
removal?
Soreness and swelling in the leg is normal
after surgery but his will reduce quickly. Some discoloration may
exist after this for a short period but this will subside.
