BOTOX BOOM FOR BRITAIN'S MEN
It seems that today’s men are giving women a
run for their money when it comes to spending on looking good, as
new research reveals that men now account for one fifth of Botox treatments carried out by Transform
Cosmetic Surgery.
According to the latest figures from Transform, the UK’s leading
cosmetic surgery
and non surgical provider, the number of men opting for the
anti-ageing jab has doubled over the last two years, making the
male Botox market boom – estimated to be worth just over £1m in
2007 alone.
Aware that the stern, solid brows of George Clooney and Gordon
Brown are very desirable, Botox is now the number one treatment for men who
want a little help holding back the hands of time.
The harassed and stressed impression furrowed brows give have made
Botox very popular amongst male celebrities in the unforgiving
media spotlight and high-flying businessmen alike. With Simon
Cowell recently emerging as a Botox devotee, men are it seems, no
longer as self conscious or embarrassed to take the plunge.
And although it’s not just male celebrities
that are doing it, there does seem to be a regional split when
comes to vanity, with men in Manchester and Liverpool most likely
to opt for wrinkle-banishing Botox, compared to guys in Bristol and
Maidstone.
Says Shami Choudry from Transform: “Over the past year alone we
have seen a 50% increase in men choosing Botox and it’s now big
business for Transform as men attempt to keep up with women.
“Men are expected to be eternally youthful in
terms of stamina and dynamism, but they are now being increasingly
judged on their looks and are very aware of the importance of a
good skincare regime in order to keep themselves fresh faced. And
with more and more celebrities admitting to enhancing their looks,
real men aren’t afraid to either and Botox is no longer taboo.”
Anti-aging measures are no longer just part of the woman’s domain,
a recent Mintel report revealed that today 9 per cent of men would
consider plastic surgery compared with 23 per cent of woman,
proving that men are swiftly catching up with women in the vain
stakes.
