Male chest reduction FAQs
1. What does gynaecomastia mean?
The word gynaecomastia comes from the Greek words ‘gyne’ meaning woman and ‘mastos’ meaning breast. Gynaecomastia is enlargement of the male breast tissue.
2. Who will benefit from male chest reduction surgery?
Any man who has an abnormal amount of fatty tissue on their chest and who is uncomfortable with it would benefit from the surgery.
3. What are the common causes of "man boobs"?
There are a number of factors which can cause a man’s chest to become overdeveloped and enlarged.
During puberty around 90% of boys develop fatty tissue around the chest and in most cases the problem resolves itself with maturity. For 10% however, the problem persists into adulthood.
Ageing is also a common factor as male hormones reduce and substantial weight loss can cause the skin to sag making the chest more prominent.
4. Can gynaecomastia surgery help me lose weight?
No. If you are obese or overweight, exercise and weight loss are recommended before surgery can be considered. Gynaecomastia surgery is not an alternative to weight loss.
5. How is the surgery performed?
Your Surgeon will remove any excess fatty tissue with liposuction under anesthetic. Depending on the individual case, gland tissue may also be removed. This will be discussed at your free consultation.
6. How long does gynaecomastia surgery take?
Surgery can take anywhere between 1 and 3 hours depending on the amount of tissue to be removed.
7. Who will perform my surgery?
When you undergo a chest reduction with Transform, you will have your own dedicated nurse and Surgeon who will care for you from start to finish.

8. Where will the operation take place?
When you choose to have cosmetic surgery with Transform, you’ll receive the best care in our own hospitals. Most providers can’t offer this.
You can count on the very highest level of care, hygiene and facilities.
9. Will I have to stay overnight in hospital?
A ’moobs’ procedure can often be performed under local anaesthetic; enabling you to return home the same day.
10. How long is the recovery period after my surgery?
Any bruising and swelling will disappear in the first 7- 10 days. At this point the first stage of healing is complete.
If you needed stitches, these will be removed after the first week.
After six weeks the bandage is removed.
Most patients are able to return to work and resume normal activities after 3 weeks and exercise after 6 weeks.
11. What results can I expect?
You can expect a firmer, more contoured chest after the initial swelling has gone down.
12. How much will my surgery cost?
This procedure varies depending upon the patient so it is difficult to give an exact price although an indicative price would range from around £2,670.
Transform also offer 0% finance to help you afford your treatment. Find out more about our cosmetic surgery finance options.
13. What does the cost include?
