What are thread veins?
Thread veins – or spider veins – are damaged veins and capillaries just below the skin.
As we age, our skin loses collagen and becomes thinner. So when veins expand, they become visible through the skin. Prominent thread veins can be inherited, but they are often caused by prolonged sun exposure, pregnancy, rosacea, steroid creams, alcohol, smoking and standing for long periods. We can also treat very large visible veins, called varicose veins.
The benefits of the thread vein removal
The benefits of thread vein removal are purely aesthetic. Extremely common in many men and women, they can be unsightly and naturally make the sufferer feel very self-conscious.
Thread vein removal treatment
We offer three different treatments for thread vein removal that are suitable for treating different areas and specific types of veins. With the exception of Veinwave, these are available at most of our clinics:
Intense pulsed light (IPL)
High specification IPL equipment delivers improved results with each application that reduces the number of visits needed. It takes 15 to 30 minutes per session.
IPL can also help in a variety of skin problems including acne, roscaea, sun-damage, fine lines and wrinkles, broken capillaries, age spots, blemishes and birthmarks.
Scelrotherapy
This involves injecting a solution directly into the blood vessel using a very fine needle. A number of veins can be treated in one session though some veins may need a second session. Scelrotherapy is not used on the face.
Veinwave
This new technology uses high frequency waves to target smaller veins and make them instantly disappear. Veinwave can be used safely anywhere on the body and is currently only available at our Edinburgh clinic.
How long does it take?
This varies from treatment to treatment, but in the case of IPL, each session lasts just 15 to 30 minutes. Watch our thread vein removal treatment demonstration video.
The results
All of our thread vein removal treatments are designed to reduce the appearance of problem veins. Results depend upon the treatment used and the condition of the veins.
How much does it cost?
Again, this is dependent upon the treatment. Your patient care co-ordinator will be able to give you an accurate cost once you have had a free consultation.
