Varicose vein removal

Many people, usually women, suffer from varicose veins. Varicose vein removal by our qualified consultant vascular surgeons can relieve you of any.

What are varicose veins

Varicose veins are not only unsightly and embarrassing, they can be swollen and painful for many people who suffer from them. They occur when blood flows backwards down the legs. This increases the pressure in veins just under the surface of the skin. These veins then become wider and more prominent.

Purple or red veins that stretch like a web under the skin are thread veins that we can also treat with different techniques.

If you are unsure whether you have thread veins or varicose veins, we can determine this in your appointment with a Patient Care Co-ordinator.

The benefits of varicose vein removal

By carefully removing varicose veins, your skin will look smoother and visibly more attractive. If your varicose veins cause you pain and discomfort, this will also disappear.

Varicose vein removal treatment

Only highly qualified consultant vascular surgeons carry out varicose vein removal procedures at Transform.

To diagnose the actual cause of your varicose veins, an ultrasound test is first carried out. Once we have identified the cause we will select one of three different minimally invasive minor surgical treatments. Only in the most serious cases would we suggest major varicose vein removal surgery.

Endovenous Laser Ablation (EVLA)

Endovenous Laser Ablation (EVLA) user laser light to seal the vein from the inside.

Radiofrequency VNUS Closure

Radiofrequency VNUS Closure is similar to EVLA but uses heat instead of a laser to seal the vein from the inside.

Both treatments effectively remove the cause of the varicose vein and prevent the blood from flowing the wrong way down your leg.

Vein Avulsion

It may be the case that some treatments can not be used for treating varicose veins, particularly when veins excessively bulge and are lumpy. Vein alvulsion can be used to remove the vein by making a small incision into the skin and removing the vein using a surgical hook.

How long does it take?

This varies according to the type of treatment, however both EVLA and VNUS procedures are minimally invasive minor surgery and only involve a local anaesthetic. Vein avulsion can take longer but for all treatments, most patients can walk and be discharged on the day of their treatment.

The results

Varicose vein removal gives permanent results. Also, as there is no traditional surgery there is less pain, discomfort and bruising.

Other treatments

We can also treat smaller thread veins or spider veins using a technique known as scelrotherapy. This isn’t usually needed though after varicose vein removal.
