How does laser hair removal work?
Laser hair removal works by destroying the base of the hair follicle that is the source of new hair growth. We can use one of two different techniques to do this – each works in a slightly different way.
Laser treatment uses a continuous laser to very gradually heat hair follicles to the point where the hair falls out. IPL treatment uses individual pulses of laser light to precisely target hair follicles and is suitable for a wider range of hair and skin types.
A course of laser hair removal treatments can give you beautifully smooth skin. Initially your hair will grow back in line with the normal hair growth cycle of 4 to 6 weeks dependent on your skin type. Then with each session, hair regrowth will be reduced and after a course of treatments you should only need a top-up treatment once a year.
IPL technology can also be used to treat a variety of skin conditions including thread veins, sun spots and rosacea.
Treatment unique to your skin
Different skin types and unwanted hair require different laser treatments and settings to safely achieve the best results. Every one of our laser aestheticians is highly trained and receives on-going training in the very latest techniques in laser hair removal. Each is fully qualified to carefully assess your skin and problem hair. After your free consultation, your laser aesthetician will then devise a personal treatment plan that gives you long-term smoother skin.
To allow us to establish the correct laser treatment for your skin and have a free hair removal patch test, book a free consultation with one of our Patient Care Co-ordinators.
Can you treat my skin type?
Laser hair removal can treat a wide variety of skin types. Our lasers should allow us to treat anyone but our fully trained aestheticians will do a patch test to make sure you are suitable for treatment. Be assured that whatever your skin type, we would never recommend any treatment that would be ineffective or harm you. With new advanced technology, we can now successfully treat darker skin types.
Your treatment will only take place in clinical premises. That's a commitment to all our patients
What does the treatment involve?
The clinic aesthetician will assess your skin type, conduct patch tests, explain any risks and recommend a personal treatment plan.
Each treatment takes from 15 minutes to an hour, depending on the area treated. A cooling conducting gel will be applied before gliding the IPL or laser machine across the skin. You’ll feel a slight tingling, but no pain.
Laser hair removal results
Effective laser hair removal is usually achieved over a course of 6 to 8 treatments. These will be spaced about 4 to 6 weeks apart and you’ll soon notice a reduction in hair growth after each treatment.
How to maintain hair-free skin
The results you can acheieve from a course of laser hair removal treatment is long lasting results. We do recommend a yearly top up treatments to maintain smooth hair-free skin.
Frequently asked questions
How many sessions will I need?
Your fully trained aesthetician will assess your individual needs, but effective laser hair removal is usually achieved over a course of 6 to 8 treatments. These will be spaced about 4 to 6 weeks apart and you’ll soon notice less and less hair growing back each time.
Winter is the best time to have treatment, however you can have laser hair treatment or top ups at any time of the year provided you don’t have a tan at the time. Your personal treatment plan can be designed to give you hair-free skin all summer long.
Is laser hair removal safe?
Yes, because our aestheticians at our clinics have completed a rigorous internal training programme that is externally verified. They also continue to have annual training. You’ll be treated in a hygienic, fully-equipped clinic where your comfort and wellbeing are our absolute priority.
Equipment is of a very high standard. We use a variety of highly reliable and proven machines across our clinics including Lightsheer, Quantum, Lumenis One, Soprano and Harmony.
Will the hair grow back?
After your first treatment, you will find that the hair will naturally grow back finer over a period of time. Hair on your face generally grows in a 4 week cycle. Body hair generally grows in a 6 week cycle. The hair is effectively reduced by approximately 10-15% after each session. We do recommend a top up once a year to maintain your hair free skin.
Can I shave in-between treatments?
You can shave the treated area in between treatments. We would recommend that waxing and plucking is avoided as this removes the hair from the follicle.
When should I plan laser hair removal treatments?
It is advisable to plan your treatment in advance, as your skin is more sensitive and you will need to avoid direct sunlight. Thus, if you’re looking to have hair free skin on the beach in July, really, you should be planning it as early as January or February.
Do I need to avoid sunlight?
After your treatment paler skin types will need to avoid direct sunlight for approximately 4 weeks. After your treatment your skin will be very sensitive and you will need to stay out of the sun for a further 4 weeks. Darker skin tones will need to avoid direct sunlight for longer periods both before and after treatment.
Can I have laser hair removal treatment if I use fake tan?
Your skin needs to be free from tanning products to be able to be treated successfully with a course of laser hair treatment. The lasers wouldn’t be able to tell the difference between natural melanin in the skin or stimulated melanin from the use of tanning products so the lasers will heat up both structures to the same temperature which can damage the skin and cause a darkening or pigmentation of the skin. The water content of the skin will also heat up which can cause the skin to blister.
How long do I need to wait after waxing or plucking before I can have laser hair removal treatment?
You will need to wait approximately 6 weeks before booking laser hair removal treatment. This is because when you pluck or wax the hair is removed from the follicle. The follicle needs to be filled with hair for the lasers to be effective at targeting the removal of hair.
Do I need to prepare before having laser hair treatment?
We would advise you shave before having laser hair removal treatment. However, for the first consultation and patch, you need to have the hair unshaven so the Aesthetician can assess the hair (to ensure correct settings are used) and to also take photographs prior to treatment to assess percentage to hair removal at the end of the course.) Please check with your laser aesthetician when you will need to shave prior to your treatment to ensure your treatment is successful in achieving hair free skin.
