Calculate
your Body Mass Index (BMI) with the NHS BMI calculator
Obesity is a serious
problem in the UK. Around 1 in 5 adults are obese (source: Blood
Pressure Association); many of whom will go on to develop serious
medical conditions, such as diabetes, heart disease, stroke, cancer
or hypertension; some will already have developed these
life-threatening diseases. It has been scientifically proven that a
healthy weight lessens the likelihood of developing these diseases.
Transform realises the importance of effective weight management in
terms of looking good; in the instance of obesity it could be the
difference between life and death.
The BioEnterics Intragastric Balloon (BIB) Programme is an
internationally acclaimed weight management programme that can help
you achieve your weight goals, losing sufficient weight to bring
you into a healthy BMI range. Use our BMI calculator to check your
body mass index. The BIB Programme is a non-surgical,
non-pharmaceutical alternative for the treatment of obesity.

Intragastric Balloon (Gastric Band) at Transform - FAQs
Am I suitable for a gastric balloon?
The BIB Programme is only suitable for certain people. As a
guideline, if your BMI is over 25 and you have a weight issue
you are likely to be suitable for a gastric balloon. Call us
or use our online form to arrange a time
and date that is good for you.
Please note you are not suitable for the BIB Programme if you have
previously undergone gastric or any other upper abdominal
surgery.
If you are clinically obese, looking for a short-term solution
to weight loss to reduce health risks associated with obesity; as
preparation to vital surgery; or as part of a supervised weight
loss programme, then the BIB Programme may be helpful to
you.
How does the BIB Programme work?
The gastric balloon (which is made of elastic, durable, high
quality silicone) is swallowed via a long tube. It is then
inflated with saline, partially filling the stomach and inducing
the feeling of fullness.
This helps the patient reduce their food intake and adopt new
eating habits. In conjunction with a supervised, healthy diet, and
behaviour modification programme to help maintain weight loss, the
tube is then removed after some time, also endoscopically.
How long will it take to insert a gastric balloon?
The procedure does not require an overnight stay, as only local
anaesthetic is required.
What results can I expect from having a gastric balloon
inserted?
Patients have lost as much as 18.5 Kg over a 6
month period provided they followed the body plan
advice given as part of their treatment .
How long is the recovery period having a gastric balloon
inserted?
Transform recommend 1 week’s holiday from work to recover from
having a gastric band inserted, as it is normal to feel tenderness
and fatigue for a few days after the procedure.
Are there any after effects to a gastric balloon?
Immediately after the procedure, the patient is advised to sip
water only occasionally and or suck on an ice cube. The first few
days after having a gastric balloon inserted will be uncomfortable
as the stomach gets used to the presence of the balloon. The
patient may experience nausea, vomiting, bloating, diarrhoea,
cramping during this time until the body adjusts.
Aside from normal, post-surgery discomfort, you should not
experience side effects from the BIB Programme. If anything
abnormal is happening, you are encouraged to get in touch with the
clinic as soon as possible so we can see if there is any problem is
and, if so, put it right straight away. We offer a comprehensive
and extensive post-operative care programme, which includes
detailed post-operative instructions and follow-up appointments
with your surgeon at your local Transform clinic to ensure a speedy
recovery, all at no additional cost. Find out
more about our comprehensive aftercare programme here.
Are there risks associated with having a gastric balloon
inserted?
Transform has performed more cosmetic surgery than any other
provider in the UK. As such, we are extremely experienced; there is
no provider better placed to help you become more confident through
cosmetic surgery. However, as with all operations, there are some
risks associated with the BIB Programme. Your surgeon can help put
you at ease regarding any worries you may have. You can talk
through these concerns at your free
consultation.
Can I combine a gastric band with other treatments?
Transform are committed to providing an effective weight loss
programme for our patients. Alongside your gastric band procedure
we recommend a Bodyplan package, a tailor
made, clinically supervised programme of diet and exercise to suit
your lifestyle and help you achieve your target weight. Of course,
we also offer a range of procedures, both surgical and non-surgical
that you may wish to explore after your BIB Programme: breast surgery, facelifts, arm and
thigh lifts are particularly popular
procedures after weight loss.
