What are thread veins?

Thread veins (or spider veins) are damaged veins and capillaries just below the skin. They are extremely common in both men and woman and are often found on the face, body and legs.

The smaller ones have a reddish appearance but larger ones can look purple and unsightly. Very large visible veins could be varicose veins.

What causes thread veins?

When the usually invisible veins expand, they start to show through the skin. Thread veins become more obvious as we age when the skin becomes thinner and loses collagen. They can be inherited but they can also be caused by a number of other factors including:

Sun exposure over the years, pregnancy, sign of rosacea (a skin condition), overuse of steroid creams, alcohol, smoking and prolonged standing.

Intense Pulsed Light (IPL)

At Transform we use high specification IPL equipment which delivers improved results at each application – reducing the number of visits you’ll need.

This simple but effective treatment should take only 15-30 minutes per session. The number of sessions needed depends on the initial skin condition.

The laser method; using Intense Pulsed light (IPL) is a versatile technology that can also help in a variety of skin conditions including acne, roscaea, sun-damage, fine lines and wrinkles, broken capillaries, age spots, blemishes, birthmarks and port wine stains.

Scelerotherapy

Scelerotherapy should not be used on the face. A solution is injected directly into the blood vessel using a very fine needle. In one treatment session a number of veins can be injected but some veins may need a second session.

Veinwave – new technology at Transform

Currently only available at our Edinburgh, Veinwave is a new technology that targets smaller veins (often not treatable with Scelerotherapy) and can be used safely on the face and body.
