What are varicose veins?
Varicose veins in the legs can be swollen, unsightly and even cause discomfort. - women in particular suffer from them.
They occur when blood flows backwards down the legs causing increased pressure in superficial veins just under the skins surface. The veins become widened and more prominent.
Veins that are purple or red and stretch like a web under the skin are spider or thread veins and are treated with different techniques.
Varicose vein treatment
One of our qualified consultant vascular Surgeons will need to carry out an ultrasound test to diagnose the cause of your varicose veins.
Non-surgical treatment will either involve laser surgery using Endovenous Laser Ablation (EVLA) or Radiofrequency VNUS Closure.
We would only suggest varicose vein removal surgery for the most serious cases.
How does varicose vein removal work?
The treatments use heat or light energy to seal the vein from the inside. They remove the cause of the varicose vein, stopping the blood flowing the wrong way down the leg.
The procedure is performed under local anaesthetic but patients can walk and be discharged on the same day.
Varicose vein removal results
The results are permanent and, because in most cases they can be treated without traditional surgery, there is less pain and discomfort, less bruising and quicker recovery.
Varicose vein removal & other treatments
Smaller veins, or ‘spider veins’, can be treated through sclerotherapy, a thread vein removal technique. However, this is not usually necessary once the varicose veins have been removed as they become less visible.
