Thinking about having a chemical peel?

Let the experts help you decide which chemical peel is right for you

The words ‘chemical’ and ‘peel’ can be quite scary, but once you have all the facts it starts to make a little more sense. The reality is that most chemical peels are derived from natural sources, glycolic acid from sugar cane, lactic acid from sour milk and salicylic acid from willow. Understanding how it works, what it is and the benefits to your skin can help you decide if a non-surgical chemical peel treatment is right for you.

What is a chemical face peel?

Chemical peels are a form of exfoliation, whereby the peel is brushed over the outer layers of the skin. As well as stimulating the growth of new cells, the peels help to revitalise tired skin and improve the skin’s texture. They can help improve aging skin, reduce fine lines and wrinkles, minimize the open pores and firm the skin.  The regenerated skin is typically smoother and leaves you looking and feeling younger.

A chemical peel can treat conditions such as:

1. Fine lines and wrinkles around the eyes and mouth

2. Sun damage

3. Mild scarring caused by acne

4. Blemishes

5. Age spots and pigmentation

6. Freckles

7. Dark patches on the skin (known as Melasma), caused from pregnancy or taking birth control pills

FAQs

What should I expect during treatment?

Procedures will vary depending on the type of chemical peel that is chosen. Your skin is prepped using a medical degreaser to ensure the treated skin area is free of any oils. The chemical agent is then applied and stays on the skin for 5- 10 minutes. Most patients will feel a mild tingling which is temporary and goes away within a few minutes.

What can I expect 24 hours after the first peel?

Your skin will feel tighter and will be redder than usual, this is due to the retinoic acid applied. You should wait at least 4 hours before washing your face.

When will my skin start to peel and for how long?

Peeling will generally start 48-72 hours after your treatment and can last for up to 1 week. It is very important not to pick off your peeling skin, peeling is easily controlled with applying lots of moisturiser.

Will one peel be sufficient?

Depending on your skin condition and the depth of the chemical peel, multiple treatments may be necessary to achieve the desired skin results.

How can I care for my skin after my peel?

Our dedicated aestheticians will help guide you and recommend vital products to care and maintain your skin. As a rule, face scrubs should be avoided. Applying a hydrating moisturiser twice a day is recommended to control dryness and peeling.

Can I wear makeup after a chemical peel?

The answer depends on the peel. Make-up is not sterile therefore should not be worn following a deeper peel. With some lighter peels makeup can be worn 24 hours afterwards. Your practitioner will advise on this question - depending really on the peel. When you start wearing make-up again, you could benefit from wearing products containing a good level of SPF.

Do I have to wear an SPF after the treatment?

Sunscreen is a must and should be worn after peel for 3-4 days after, as the skin is temporarily more sensitive to the sun.

Can I go on holiday after a peel?

No – this is not recommended, so we would not do a peel if you are planning a holiday within the next two weeks.

Can I exfoliate after my chemical peels?

 No, this is not advised.

Can I use a sunbed after the chemical peel?

No, sunbeds should not be used during a course of chemical peels.

User tried and tested: Epionce Lite Refresh Peel

“I have never had a peel before and I had this peel a day ago – My practitioner picked this peel for me due to my skin type being very sensitive and the different skin products I am allergic to. A day later my skin feels amazing, smooth, and less red. The Epionce firming mask used at the end was so lush and calming to my skin, I bought it! My practitioner knew straight away what my skin needed and the chemical peel that would suit my skin” - A. Lee, Manchester Pines Clinic
