Although breast enlargement is a very commonly performed surgery, it’s important to remember that any surgery carries some potential risks – in this case, these are bleeding, infection, and implant rippling. We’ll discuss all potential risks with you prior to surgery and answer any question you have.

Breast implants are not designed to last forever, but they don’t have a specific lifespan. Most surgeons say it’s wise to have your implants replaced between 10 to 20 years after the original procedure. Even if you’ve not experienced any problems with them, we recommend getting your implants checked over by a surgeon around 10 years after your surgery to make sure everything’s still okay. The Natrelle™ implants we use have a manufacturer lifetime guarantee with supplier Allergan. This means in the unlikely event that you experience any complications with them, the cost of replacing the implants will be covered.

‘Over’ or ‘above the muscle’ procedures involve placing the breast implant in front of your breast muscle, which means it’s more superficial and sits just below the breast tissue. This might be the best option for you if you have some breast tissue already or if you’re restoring fullness to deflated breasts. ‘Under’ or ‘behind the muscle’ refers to an implant that sits behind the breast muscle. This is suitable for women with very small breasts who have very little breast fat. This method reduces the likelihood of your breast implants showing and gives a more natural looking result but it’s more difficult to place larger implants this way. Your surgeon will discuss with you the results you want to achieve from breast surgery and will advise the best implant placement for your body.

FIND OUT MORE

After discussing the look you want to achieve, your surgeon will make his/her recommendations on which size of implant to go for and explain their choice to you. Although your surgeon will be able to give you an estimation of your new breast size based on the implant size and the current size of your breasts, we can’t guarantee exactly what size your breasts will be after surgery. Your surgeon will discuss with you the results you want to achieve from breast surgery and will advise the best implant size for your body.

You can expect minor scarring from your breast enlargement surgery, but these will fade significantly over time and become much less noticeable. We’ll make sure you understand where any scarring will occur before you book in for surgery. Your surgeon will explain to you where the incisions will be made to place your implants; one method leaves a scar under the breast hidden in the crease, or your surgeon might use an approach where the incisions are made around the areola or through the armpit.

Yes – in fact, if your breasts have lost volume, your surgeon might also recommend having an uplift in order to achieve the look you want.

Pregnancy affects breasts with implants in the same way that it affects breasts without them. So if you gain a lot of weight during pregnancy, the skin of the breast can stretch, which can lead to sagging afterwards.

Anaplastic Large Cell Lymphoma (ALCL) is an extremely rare type of non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma (NHL), a cancer involving the cells of the immune system. ALCL can affect between 1 and 3 in a million (or 0.0003%) women who have breast implants. It is important to emphasise the extremely low probability of ALCL occurring in women with breast implants. Instances of Breast Implant Associated ALCL generally occur several years after the breast implant surgery; on average, 8 years following the procedure. The majority of cases are easily treated by removing both the implant and the surrounding capsule, known as a total capsulectomy. Breast enlargement patients will be made fully aware of the condition as part of the consent process before having their procedure.

More details on breast enlargement

When you come to Transform, the entire experience is designed around you and your needs. We’ll listen carefully to your aspirations for being the best you, and you’ll receive all the advice and support you need throughout your journey with us. Here’s a step-by-step guide to what you can expect.

Breast enlargement step-by-step

The first step is to meet your patient advisor. You’ll be able to talk to them about why you’re considering a ‘boob job’, the likely costs and finance options, how much time you’ll probably need to take off work, and when you’d like to have the surgery. If you feel ready, we’ll then book you in for your free consultation with one of our surgeons.

FIND OUT MORE

At your free consultation, your surgeon will ask you about the results you want to achieve from the surgery. You can discuss every aspect of your breast enlargement – from implant size and recovery time to the benefits and risks –with no obligation to go ahead. Our surgeons are extremely knowledgeable and happy to answer any questions you have. They’ll look at your medical history, measure your breasts, guide you through your implant options and advise you about the most appropriate size. They won’t be able to guarantee an exact final cup size, but they’ll work with you to ensure you choose the right implants for you and your body. If you feel ready to go ahead and book your surgery, they’ll then refer you to a clinic nurse who’ll perform some pre-op tests and procedures.

FIND OUT MORE

You can choose to have breast enlargement surgery as a day case or as an overnight stay in one of our cosmetic surgery hospitals. On the day of your surgery, you’ll meet with your surgeon so you can go through the consent form and ask any last-minute questions. You’ll then be introduced to the rest of your surgical team before going into theatre. During the one to two-hour procedure, your surgeon will make incisions in your breasts, either in the crease under your breast, around the nipple or towards your armpit. This allows for your breast implants to be positioned in place either in front of or behind the pectoral (chest) muscle.

We’ll be here throughout the recovery process to help you recuperate quickly and safely. Your surgeon will check that you’re properly recovered from the operation before discharging you. At this stage, you’ll feel very sore from your operation and won’t be able to drive, so you’ll need to make sure that you’ve made arrangements to get home. For the first 24 to 48 hours following your surgery, it’s normal for your breasts to feel high, heavy and tight; we’ll provide you with pain relief to help you feel more comfortable. You’ll be able to see initial results straight after your surgery. Although your breasts may feel slightly swollen or sit ‘high’ at first, they’ll settle in six to eight weeks when you’ll be able to see the final results.

FIND OUT MORE

We believe that the highest quality aftercare is just as important as the surgery itself, so we’re here to support you. You’ll need to give your body plenty of time to heal and we’ll give you detailed guidance on the best way to do this. We recommend at least one week off work and two weeks of full-time support around the house. You’ll also need help with childcare, and you should limit exercise to low-impact activities like walking. Your breasts will be sensitive and swollen for quite a few weeks, but we’ll have advised you on the type of bra you need to wear. You should rest as much as you can and avoid strenuous activity or stretching, especially until your stitches have been removed, which will happen one to two weeks after your surgery. Within six to eight weeks, your body should have healed to the extent that you’ll see the full results of your ‘boob job’ surgery. If you have any questions or concerns at all, you can contact our 24/7 helpline. You’ll also have a series of follow up appointments with the Transform team to make sure you’re healing well. All patients have access to our three-year aftercare programme as standard and you’ll have the option to extend cover to up to 10 years.
