Time to focus on you

Breast reduction surgery is a procedure which reduces the size of the breasts for women who have uneven or uncomfortably large breasts. Surgically known as a reduction mammoplasty, the procedure involves removing fat and skin, and sometimes the reshaping of the breasts, to result in a smaller, more manageable size

You might be considering breast reduction surgery for a variety of reasons, including pain and discomfort in your back, neck and shoulders. You might may also consider a breast reduction if you find it difficult to take part in sports or are tired of ill-fitting swimwear and clothing due to the size of your breasts.

Enhance how you look, change how you feel

The benefits of a breast reduction can be significant, for both cosmetic and physical reasons. By having the procedure, your overall silhouette can be improved through creating a more proportionate breast size which complements the rest of the body.

Your posture can be improved without the weight of heavy breasts which may cause aching and discomfort. Large breasts can also lead to uncomfortable rashes underneath, and a breast reduction reduces the risk of this happening. Having smaller breasts may also create more options when choosing swimwear and clothing

These benefits and more can lead to an increased level of self-confidence and comfort in your everyday life.

Let’s delve into the detail

As with every surgical procedure, it’s important that you’re aware of any potential risks that breast reduction surgery may pose, however small, so that you can weigh these up against the benefits that surgery can bring.

Your surgeon assistant and expert surgeon will be happy to discuss any possible complications and give you detailed information regarding the procedure. As a guide, these may include bleeding, infections, bruising, numbness, scars and rupture.

Large breasts can mean that you struggle to find clothing that fits properly, you may be tired of tight bra straps digging into your shoulders, you may also have persistent back, neck and shoulder pain and may have discomfort when playing sports or running.

Weighing up these problems against the risks of surgery will help you to determine whether breast reduction is the right choice for you.

FAQ

Breast Reduction FAQs

More FAQs
How much does a breast reduction cost?

As a responsible provider of cosmetic surgery, we understand that everyone’s procedure is different, so our treatment plans are tailored specifically around your unique needs. Because of this, the cost of a breast reduction can vary.

How long does a breast reduction take?

Breast reduction surgery will take around two to four hours, and you’ll be put under general anaesthetic for this procedure. You’ll need to stay in hospital for at least two nights, where you’ll receive high quality care from our nursing team.
How long will I have to stay in hospital after my breast reduction?

You’ll need to stay in hospital for two nights where you’ll be cared for by our nurses. Your surgeon will check that you are fit before you return home.
Will a breast reduction lift my breasts?

Large breasts can often sag due to their weight, causing nipples to point downwards as a result. Breast reduction surgery reduces the size and weight of the breasts, resulting in breasts that are smaller and appear firmer and more lifted. Following breast reduction surgery, your breasts should appear more in proportion to your body. You can discuss the visual aspects of treatment with your surgeon during the free consultation.
When will I be able to see the results from my breast reduction surgery?

Changes should be visible shortly after the breast reduction procedure, but post-operative swelling may prevent you from seeing the end result for some time. Although the swelling will slowly decrease over the weeks after your surgery, it can take up to six months for the full results to be seen. Regular follow-up appointments will help you to monitor the progress of your breast reduction and ensure that the incisions are healing well. Once the swelling has settled, you’ll be able to see the final results.
Will breast reduction surgery leave visible scars?
You should expect some degree of scarring, but the extent of this will depend on where the incisions were made and the type of procedure. The position of any scars generally ensures that they are hidden when you are wearing clothes and after twelve months the scarring should fade significantly. Some of the scars will be concealed along the crease of the breast, but parts of the scar will remain visible.
Will I still be able to breastfeed following a breast reduction?
Breastfeeding may still be an attainable goal following breast reduction surgery and all efforts will be made to preserve milk-producing tissue during the procedure. However, there is a level of risk that breastfeeding following a breast reduction may not be achievable. Such risks and concerns will be discussed in depth by your surgeon at your initial consultation.
How will my breast reduction be impacted by future weight loss or gain?
The size and shape of your breasts should remain consistent, but this cannot be guaranteed if you gain or lose a significant amount of weight in the future. Excessive weight gain or weight loss may result in fluctuations in the shape and size of your breasts. This will be covered in your consultation, but if you have any specific weight goals in mind or concerns surrounding pregnancy, you should discuss this prior to the procedure with your surgeon.
Will reduction surgery correct my uneven breasts?
If you have one breast larger than the other, you may be a good candidate for a breast reduction procedure. While it is common to have one breast that is slightly larger than the other, if there is a significant difference in size, it may be possible to create a more even appearance by having a breast reduction and reducing the size of the larger breast.
Are there age restrictions for breast reduction surgery?
Back, neck and shoulder pain caused by large or oversized breasts can affect people of all ages. The minimum age for breast reduction surgery at Transform is 18. A key consideration when opting to have breast reduction surgery is whether you plan to have children in the future because a breast reduction may impact your ability to breast feed successfully. For this reason we don't typically recommend that a breast reduction is undertaken prior to having children.
What is a nipple graft?
During the breast reduction procedure, a nipple graft may take place depending on the amount of tissue that needs to be removed from the breast. Once the breast is reformed in the desired size and shape, the nipple is positioned in the optimum location and grafted back into place.
Will my breasts lose sensitivity following a reduction?
In some cases, women find that they do experience a loss of nipple sensitivity after a breast reduction. This, and other potential side effects, will be discussed at length during your pre-surgery consultations.
Will I need to have any further surgery following a breast reduction?
Women who have a breast reduction surgery are generally satisfied with the appearance of their breasts and enjoy the increased comfort levels that come with smaller breasts and no further surgical procedures are required. Unlike other breast procedures such as breast enlargement where implants need to be replaced, a breast reduction shouldn't require follow-up procedures to maintain the appearance. Unless you become pregnant or gain a significant amount of weight after a breast reduction, the shape and size of your breasts should remain the same.

Next steps

Your journey step by step

Your first appointment

The initial step is to talk to your surgeon assistant over the phone. You’ll be able to talk to them about why you’re considering a breast reduction, the likely costs and finance options, how much time you’ll probably need to take off work, and when you’d like to have the surgery. Whenever you decide to book a surgery date, you can secure it for a minimum refundable deposit of £500. If you feel ready, we’ll then book you in for your free consultation with one of our surgeons.

Free surgical consultation

At your free consultation, your surgeon will ask you about the results you want to achieve from the surgery. You can discuss what you ideally want your breasts to look like, find out whether you’re a suitable candidate for this surgery, and discover what the benefits and risks are, all with no obligation to go ahead. If you don't live close to a clinic, these consultations can be carried out over video chat. Our surgeons are extremely knowledgeable and are happy to answer any questions you have.

They’ll look at your medical history, and it’s wise to tell them about any pregnancy plans you have in the future or weight loss goals you have in mind. They’ll discuss with you the outcome that you can anticipate, as well as any potential complications involved in the procedure. If you feel ready to go ahead and book your surgery, they’ll then refer you to a clinic nurse who’ll perform some pre-op tests and procedures.

The surgery

On the day of your surgery, you’ll meet with your surgeon so you can go through the consent form and ask any last-minute questions. You’ll then be introduced to the rest of your surgical team before going into theatre.

During the two to four-hour procedure, your surgeon will make incisions in your breasts and remove excess breast tissue, fat and skin. The remaining breast tissue will be re-shaped to create smaller, more elevated breasts. Your nipples will be moved to a new position and the areola area around the nipple may be reduced in size to reflect these changes.

Recovery

Following the procedure, you’ll need to stay in hospital for two nights, where you’ll receive the highest quality aftercare. Your breasts are likely to be swollen and feel tender to start with, and it is normal to feel discomfort during the first 24 to 48 hours. There may also be some bruising at this stage. We’ll provide pain relief to help with any discomfort you may experience, but you should be up and about within 48 hours.

Before you leave the hospital, we’ll talk to you about looking after yourself at home and make a follow-up appointment with your surgeon to remove your stitches. We’ll give you the number for our 24/7 patient helpline so you can speak to a member of our clinical team, day or night.

During the first two weeks, it’s likely that you’ll notice reduced swelling, bruising, pain and discomfort. During this time, you’ll also have your stitches removed.

Aftercare

We believe that the highest quality aftercare is just as important as the surgery itself, so we’re here to support you through the recovery period. You’ll need to give your body plenty of time to heal and we’ll give you detailed guidance on the best way to do this. The recovery period will differ from person to person, but we recommend at least one week off work and in some cases two weeks may be necessary. You’ll need to wear a surgical bra for the first few days, and this will be replaced with a sports bra, which you should wear at all times during the recovery period. You should avoid any exercise and heavy or overhead lifting for six weeks, by which time you should have recovered from your breast reduction surgery. This is when you’ll be able to see the full results of your surgery.

Any remaining scars usually fade significantly in the coming months. If you have any questions or concerns at all, you can contact our 24/7 helpline. You’ll also have a series of follow-up appointments with the Transform team to make sure you’re healing well. All patients have access to our two-year aftercare programme as standard and you’ll have the option to extend cover by five years.
