Breast Reduction

Breast reduction, also called mammoplasty or sometimes simply a ‘boob job’, can help women with large, oversized or uneven breasts regain more natural proportions.

You may be considering breast reduction surgery if you have larger breasts or want to even out your silhouette if one breast is larger than the other. Many women find that the procedure alleviates the backache, neck pain and painful rashes they’ve been experiencing, and often helps to improve their posture. Here at Transform, our team guides thousands of women each year through breast surgery and you can rest assured that you’ll have access to our three-year aftercare programme. Get in touch and start your journey to being the best you.

As a responsible provider of cosmetic surgery, we understand that each individual's procedure is different and will be tailored specifically around the patient. Because of this, we place a great deal of importance on our free face-to-face, no obligation consultations. Breast reduction surgery usually takes between two and four hours under general anaesthetic.

You’ll usually need to stay in one of our hospitals for two nights. We’ll discuss what we think is best with you before we book your surgery.

Large breasts can often sag due to their weight and nipples can point downwards as a result. Breast reduction surgery reduces the size and weight of the breasts and as a result breasts are smaller and more lifted. Following breast reduction surgery, your breasts should appear in proportion to your body, whilst also appearing lifted and firmer. The ultimate goal of any cosmetic surgeon is to create natural looking breasts, and you can discuss the visual aspects with your surgeon prior to the procedure.

Changes should be visible shortly after the breast reduction procedure, but post-op swelling may prevent you from seeing the end result for some time. Although the swelling will slowly decrease over the weeks after your surgery, it can take up to six months for the full results to be seen. Regular follow-up appointments will help you to monitor the progress of your breast reduction and ensure that the incisions are healing well.

You should expect some degree of scarring, but the extent of this will depend on where the incisions were made and the type of procedure. The position of any scars generally ensures that they are hidden when you are wearing clothes and after twelve months the scarring should fade significantly. Some of the scars will be concealed along the crease of the breast, but parts of the scar will remain visible.

Breastfeeding may still be an attainable goal following breast reduction surgery and all efforts will be made to preserve milk-producing tissue during the procedure. However, there is a level of risk that breastfeeding following a breast reduction may not be achievable. Such risks and concerns will be discussed in depth by your surgeon at your initial consultation.

The size and shape of your breasts should remain consistent, but this cannot be guaranteed if you gain or lose a significant amount of weight in the future. Excessive weight gain or weight loss may result in fluctuations in the shape and size of your breasts. This will be covered in your consultation, but if you have any specific weight goals in mind or concerns surrounding pregnancy, you should discuss this prior to the procedure with your surgeon.

If you have one breast larger than the other, you may be a good candidate for a breast reduction procedure. While it is common to have one breast that is slightly larger than the other, if there’s a significant difference in size, it may be possible to create a more even appearance by having a breast reduction and reducing the size of the larger breast.

Back, neck and shoulder pain caused by large or oversized breasts can affect people of all ages. The minimum age for breast reduction surgery at Transform is 18. A key consideration when opting to have breast reduction surgery is whether you plan to have children in the future because a breast reduction may impact your ability to breast feed successfully. For this reason we don’t typically recommend a breast reduction is undertaken prior to having children.

During the breast reduction procedure, a nipple graft may take place depending on the amount of tissue that needs to be removed from the breast. Once the breast is reformed in the desired size and shape, the nipple is positioned in the optimum location and grafted back into place.

In some cases, symptoms can occur after breast reduction surgery including loss of nipple sensitivity. Potential side effects and recovery steps will be discussed at length during your pre-surgery consultations.

FIND OUT MORE

Women who have a breast reduction surgery are generally satisfied with the appearance of their breasts and enjoy the increased comfort levels that come with smaller breasts and no further surgical procedures are required. Unlike other breast procedures such as breast enlargement where implants need to be replaced, a breast reduction shouldn't require follow-up procedures to maintain the appearance. Unless you become pregnant or gain a significant amount of weight after a breast reduction, the shape and size of your breasts should remain the same.

More details on breast reduction

When you come to Transform, the entire experience is designed around you and your needs. We’ll listen carefully to your aspirations for being the best you, and you’ll receive all the advice and support you need throughout your journey with us. Here’s a step-by-step guide to what you can expect.

Breast Reduction step by step

The first step is to meet your patient advisor. You’ll be able to talk to them about why you’re considering a ‘boob job’, the likely costs and finance options, how much time you’ll probably need to take off work, and when you’d like to have the surgery. If you feel ready, we’ll then book you in for your free consultation with one of our surgeons.

FIND OUT MORE

At your free consultation, your surgeon will ask you about the results you want to achieve from the surgery. You can discuss what you ideally want your breasts to look like, whether you are a suitable candidate for the surgery and the benefits and risks – with no obligation to go ahead. Our surgeons are extremely knowledgeable and happy to answer any questions you have. They’ll look at your medical history and it’s wise to tell them about any pregnancy plans you have in the future or weight loss goals you have in mind. They’ll discuss with you the outcome that you can anticipate as well as any potential complications involved in the procedure. If you feel ready to go ahead and book your surgery, they’ll then refer you to a clinic nurse who’ll perform some pre-op tests and procedures.

FIND OUT MORE

On the day of your surgery, you’ll meet with your surgeon so you can go through the consent form and ask any last-minute questions. You’ll then be introduced to the rest of your surgical team before going into theatre. During the two to four-hour procedure, your surgeon will make incisions in your breasts and remove excess breast tissue, fat and skin. The remaining breast tissue will be re-shaped to create smaller, more elevated breasts. Your nipples will be moved to a new position and the areola area around the nipple may be reduced in size to reflect these changes.

Following the procedure, you’ll need to stay in one of our Transform Hospitals for two nights, where you’ll receive the highest quality aftercare. Your breasts are likely to be swollen and feel tender to start with and it is normal to feel discomfort during the first 24 to 48 hours. There may also be some bruising at this stage. We’ll provide pain relief to help with any discomfort you may experience, but you should be up and around within 48 hours. During the first two weeks you should notice reduced swelling, bruising, pain and discomfort. During this time you will also have your stiches removed. Before you leave the hospital, we’ll talk to you about looking after yourself at home and make a follow-up appointment with your surgeon to remove your stitches. We’ll also give you the number for our 24/7 patient helpline so you can speak to a member of our clinical team, day or night.

FIND OUT MORE

We believe that the highest quality aftercare is just as important as the surgery itself, so we’re here to support you through the recovery period. You’ll need to give your body plenty of time to heal and we’ll give you detailed guidance on the best way to do this. The recovery period will differ from person to person, but we recommend at least one week off work and in some cases two weeks may be necessary. You’ll need to wear a surgical bra for the first few days and this will be replaced with a sports bra, which you should wear at all times during the recovery period. You should avoid any exercise and heavy or overhead lifting for six weeks, by which time you should have recovered from your breast reduction surgery. This is when you’ll be able to see the full results of your ‘boob job’ surgery. Any remaining scars usually fade significantly in the coming months. If you have any questions or concerns at all, you can contact our 24/7 helpline. You’ll also have a series of follow-up appointments with the Transform team to make sure you’re healing well. All patients have access to our three-year aftercare programme as standard and you’ll have the option to extend cover to up to 10 years.
