Chest reduction

Male chest reduction surgery is designed to remove excess fat and sagging skin from an enlarged chest. It’s helped many men to regain more natural proportions and had a positive impact on their lifestyle and self-esteem.

An overdeveloped or enlarged male chest, known as ‘gynaecomastia’, can be the result of losing weight or the natural ageing process. This can cause extra tissue around the nipples or create prominent male breasts, which can affect your confidence and lifestyle.

If you’re concerned about an enlarged chest, at Transform we have the ability to treat it. Our team guides thousands of men each year through surgery and you can rest assured that you’ll have access to our three-year aftercare programme. Get in touch and start your journey to being the best you.

Chest reduction frequently asked questions

You’ll have the opportunity to ask your surgeon any questions as part of your consultation, but to start the ball rolling here are the answers to some that our patients most frequently ask.

Chest reduction FAQs

As a responsible provider of cosmetic surgery, we understand that each individual’s procedure is different and will be tailored specifically around the patient. Because of this, we place a great deal of importance on our free face-to-face, no obligation consultations. Following our consultation process your patient advisor will provide a detailed pricing overview around the particular procedure. Please view our pricing and finance page to read more about our flexible credit options, available via our partnership with a specialist financial provider. More info here.

Gynaecomastia surgery is used to flatten and enhance the shape of the chest. We have three classifications of chest reduction surgery your surgeon will have discussed with you which type you require prior to surgery. Gynaecomastia surgery involves using liposuction to remove excess fat, and depending on your requirements, excess skin and glandular tissue may also be removed in order to achieve expected results. Following your procedure, you may be required to stay overnight at a Transform hospital.

You’ll usually need to stay in one of our hospitals for one night. We’ll discuss what we think is best with you before we book your surgery.

You can expect to feel some discomfort for several days following your surgery, however we will provide pain relief in hospital and also advise on managing any discomfort when you return home. If you have any concerns during your recovery, you will have access to our 24/7 patient helpline, so there will always be someone available to help.

The results will be immediately visible after your surgery, and if you maintain a healthy lifestyle, you can expect the results to last.

We advise you to take a full week off work following gynaecomastia surgery.

We advise to wait at least six weeks following your surgery before going to the gym, and recommend beginning with simple exercises, especially if your exercise involves heavy lifting.

Your surgeon will make every effort to keep scarring to a minimum. Incisions are usually kept within the natural contours of your chest, so any scarring will be as discreet as possible and will fade over time.

More details on chest reduction

When you come to Transform, the entire experience is designed around you and your needs. We’ll listen carefully to your aspirations for being the best you, and you’ll receive all the advice and support you need throughout your journey with us. Here’s a step-by-step guide to what you can expect.

Chest reduction step-by-step

The first step is to meet your patient advisor. You’ll be able to talk to them about why you’re considering chest reduction surgery, the likely costs and finance options, how much time you’ll probably need to take off work, and when you’d like to have the surgery. If you feel ready, we’ll then book you in for your free consultation with one of our surgeons.

At your free consultation, your surgeon will ask you about the results you want to achieve from the surgery. You can discuss what you ideally want your chest to look like, whether you are a suitable candidate for the surgery and the benefits and risks with no obligation to go ahead. Our surgeons are extremely knowledgeable and happy to answer any questions you have. They’ll go through the type of surgery you will need and the results you can expect to achieve. If you feel ready to go ahead and book your surgery, they’ll then refer you to a clinic nurse who’ll perform some pre-op tests and procedures.

On the day of your surgery, you’ll meet with your surgeon so you can go through the consent form and ask any last-minute questions. You’ll then be introduced to the rest of your surgical team before going into theatre. Male chest reduction surgery uses liposuction to remove excess fat. Depending on the result you want to achieve, it may also involve removing glandular tissue and loose skin. We have three classifications of chest reduction surgery, all of which are performed by our experienced cosmetic surgeons at one of our Transform hospitals: Grade 1 involves small to moderate gland removal. Grade 2 involves a moderate to large combination of gland and skin removal. Grade 3 involves a larger combination of skin, glandular and fatty breast tissue removal.

Following the procedure, you may need to stay for one night in the Transform hospital where your surgery has taken place, where you’ll receive the highest quality aftercare. Before you leave the hospital, we’ll talk to you about looking after yourself at home and make a follow-up appointment with your surgeon. We’ll also give you the number for our 24/7 patient helpline so you can speak to a member of our clinical team, day or night.

We believe that the highest quality aftercare is just as important as the surgery itself, so we’re here to support you through the recovery period. You may feel sore or uncomfortable for several days after chest reduction surgery, so we will prescribe some painkillers. In some cases, pain may persist for some weeks after surgery, although it is rare for patients to experience extreme pain. There will also be noticeable swelling and bruising for a number of weeks. We recommend taking a few days off work in the early stages of healing. If you have any questions or concerns at all, you can contact our 24/7 helpline. You’ll also have a series of follow-up appointments with the Transform team to make sure you’re healing well. All patients have access to our three-year aftercare programme as standard and you’ll have the option to extend cover to up to 10 years.
