Eye bag removal

Eye bag removal surgery, also called blepharoplasty, is a procedure that’s designed to remove bags under your eyes or drooping eyelids, which can help create a more toned, younger looking facial appearance.

As we age, the muscles around the eyes relax and lose elasticity of the skin surrounding them, and others factors such as sun damage or smoking may make this worse. If you’re unhappy that the bags under your eyes or drooping eyelids are giving you an aged, tired appearance, blepharoplasty surgery could remove the excess fat and skin to tighten up the eye area.

Eye bag removal frequently asked questions

You’ll have the opportunity to ask your surgeon any questions as part of your consultation, but to start the ball rolling here are the answers to some that our patients most frequently ask.

Eye bag removal FAQs

As a responsible provider of cosmetic surgery, we understand that each individual’s procedure is different and will be tailored specifically around the patient. Because of this, we place a great deal of importance on our free face-to-face, no obligation consultations. Following our consultation process your patient advisor will provide a detailed pricing overview around the particular procedure. Please view our pricing and finance page to read more about our flexible credit options, available via our partnership with a specialist financial provider. More info here.

Cosmetic surgery to correct heavy, saggy or tired-looking eyelids is called upper blepharoplasty. The procedure removes excess skin and fat in the eyelids to provide tauter skin and help achieve a fresher looking eye area.nCosmetic surgery to correct bags under the eyes is called lower blepharoplasty. The procedure removes excess skin and fat in the area beneath the eyes, to help provide tauter skin. The procedures can be carried out under both local and general anaesthetic, and some patients choose to have both procedures at the same time.

As with all surgical procedures, there are some risks attached, but we’ll fully explain these to you so you can feel as confident and reassured as possible before going ahead.

If you have your procedure under local anaesthetic, you will be able to leave hospital the same day. General Anaesthetic will require an overnight stay at one of our hospitals. You may feel some discomfort to begin with as the areas will feel tight, however we will provide you with pain relief during your hospital stay, and also give advice on how to manage your recovery at home. You can expect some swelling and bruising in the first couple of weeks.

You can usually leave the Transform hospital the same day if you have either an upper or lower blepharoplasty. If you have both procedures, an overnight stay will probably be required.

No, although we do recommend wearing dark sunglasses for the first week after Blepharoplasty surgery.

Losing skin elasticity and muscle tone around the eyes is common as we get older, so it is important to understand that the ageing process will not stop even after Blepharoplasty. During your medical consultation, your surgeon will discuss with you the results you can expect to achieve.

Eye bag removal step-by-step

The first step is to meet your patient advisor. Youu2019ll be able to talk to them about why youu2019re considering eye surgery, the likely costs and finance options, how much time youu2019ll probably need to take off work, and when youu2019d like to have the surgery. If you feel ready, weu2019ll then book you in for your free consultation with one of our surgeons.

At your free consultation, your surgeon will ask you about the results you want to achieve from the surgery. You can discuss every aspect of your eye surgery u2013 from the different procedures to the benefits and risks u2013with no obligation to go ahead. Our surgeons are extremely knowledgeable and happy to answer any questions you have.nThere are several eye alteration procedures, which tackle the upper eyelid, beneath the eyes, or both together. Your surgeon will discuss the right surgery method for you and the results you can realistically expect. If you feel ready to go ahead and book your surgery, theyu2019ll then refer you to a clinic nurse whou2019ll perform some pre-op tests and procedures.

On the day of your surgery, youu2019ll meet with your surgeon so you can go through the consent form and ask any last-minute questions. Youu2019ll then be introduced to the rest of your surgical team before going into theatre.nThere are three types of blepharoplasty that we perform:nUpper blepharoplasty, which is performed along the crease line of the upper eyelid.nLower blepharoplasty, which is performed along the crease of the lower eyelash.nUpper and lower blepharoplasty, when both the upper and lower procedures are performed together.nDuring the procedure, your surgeon will make incisions into either the creases in your eyelids or just below your eyelashes. The excess fat and skin is removed to tighten up the area.

Weu2019ll be here throughout the recovery process to help you recuperate quickly and safely. You can usually leave the Transform hospital the same day if you have either an upper or lower blepharoplasty. If you have both procedures, an overnight stay will probably be required.nBefore leaving hospital, we’ll give you practical advice on how to look after the treated area and make a follow-up appointment to check your progress. We’ll also give you a 24/7 patient helpline number to call if you have any concerns.

We believe that the highest quality aftercare is just as important as the surgery itself, so weu2019re here to support you. Your eyes may feel sore initially and you will probably want to take a few days off work whilst they begin to heal.nIf you have any questions or concerns at all, you can contact our 24/7 helpline. All patients have access to our three-year aftercare programme as standard and youu2019ll have the option to extend cover to up to 10 years.
