Time to focus on you

Ear reshaping, also known as otoplasty, is a surgical procedure which is carried out to reduce the size of the ear, reshape it, or ‘pin back’ prominent or misshaped ears. This simple cosmetic surgery procedure enhances the appearance of the ears by removing or reshaping the cartilage that sits inside.

This is a very straightforward procedure which can be performed on both men and women who feel their lives are being negatively affected by how their ears look. The Transform team guides thousands of patients through their cosmetic surgery each year, so you can rest assured that you’re in expert hands.

Enhance how you look, change how you feel

Ear reshaping is performed if you don’t like how far your ears stick out from your head, if you feel they are too large in proportion to your head, or if your ears are misshapen due to an injury or birth defect.

After surgery, you may find that your self-confidence improves through feeling happier about the way you look. If you’ve been using your hair to hide your ears in the past, you’ll also have a wider choice of hairstyles to choose from.

Following otoplasty surgery, we aim to create more natural, proportionate and symmetrical looking ears that, where needed, are closer to your head.

Let’s delve into the detail

As with every surgical procedure, it’s important that you are aware of any potential risks that ear reshaping may pose, however small. This means that you can weigh these up against the benefits that surgery can bring.

FAQ

Otoplasty (inc earlobe repair and reshaping) FAQs

More FAQs
How much does ear reshaping cost?
Every patient’s procedure is different and is tailored specifically to their individual needs. As a result, ear surgery costs can vary, but your surgeon assistant will be able to provide you with the cost of your procedure when we see you at your free consultation. It’s important to bear in mind that although cost is, of course, an important factor in your final decision, it should be considered alongside other elements such as level of care, patient safety and your surgeon’s experience.
What does an ear reshaping involve?
Ear correction or reshaping usually involves making a small cut behind the ear to expose the ear cartilage. The surgeon will remove small pieces of cartilage if necessary. They’ll then stitch the back of your ear, reshaping and repositioning where needed.
How long does an ear correction surgery take?
Ear correction usually takes around two hours under local anaesthetic. Providing you feel fit and well, you should be able to return home within a few hours of surgery.
When can I return to work?
You can discuss this with your own surgeon, but we usually recommend about a week off work to fully recover. This will, of course, depend on your own individual circumstances and your type of employment.
What are the risks of ear correction?
Any risks associated with ear correction surgery will be discussed during your surgical consultation. As a guide, ear reshaping surgery can sometimes result in stiff, puffy and numb ears temporarily, bruising, and scarring which will fade in time and will be hidden behind your ears.

Next steps

Behind the scenes care to help you take centre stage

Your first appointment

The initial step in your otoplasty journey is to talk to your surgeon assistant over the phone. You’ll be able to talk to them about why you’re considering ear surgery, the likely costs and finance options, how much time you’ll probably need to take off work, and when you’d like to have the surgery if you decide to go ahead. Whenever you decide to book a surgery date, you can secure it for a minimum refundable deposit of £500. If you feel ready, we’ll then book you in for your free consultation with one of our surgeons.

Your surgical consultation

At your free consultation, your surgeon will ask you about the results you want to achieve from your surgery. You can discuss every aspect of your ear reshaping, from the different procedures, surgical method and recovery time to the benefits and risks, and there’s no obligation to go ahead. This surgical consultation can be carried out either over video chat or in person at your local clinic. Our surgeons are extremely knowledgeable and are happy to answer any questions you have. Your general health will also be assessed, and the surgeon will recommend the best course of treatment for you.

If you feel ready to go ahead and book your surgery, they’ll then refer you to a clinic nurse who’ll perform some pre-op tests and procedures.

The surgery

In most cases, ear correction surgery takes around two hours and is performed under local anaesthetic, meaning you can usually go home within a few hours of the procedure. On the day, you’ll meet with your surgeon so you can go through the consent form and ask any last-minute questions. You’ll be introduced to the rest of your surgical team before going into theatre.

You will know in advance which ear correction method your surgeon will use. This usually involves removing skin and reshaping the cartilage from behind the ears. The ears will then be stitched into the new, corrected, position. The incisions will be expertly concealed behind the ear, in the natural crease, meaning any scars will be hidden. The surgeon is likely to put a bandage around your head to help your ears heal in their new position and to protect them from infection.

Recovery

We’ll be here throughout the recovery process after your ear surgery to help you recuperate quickly and safely. Your ears are likely to be sore, swollen and bruised to begin with and the area will be bandaged. Your surgeon will advise how long to keep this in place, and whether you should wear a smaller and lighter (sports style) headband to protect your ears once removed. We’d recommend you don’t drive during the time you are wearing these, as your hearing will be muffled.

Before you go home, we’ll talk you through how to care for your ears and we’ll also make a date and time for your follow up appointment. We’ll also give you our 24/7 patient helpline number in case you feel you need to speak to a member of our clinical team.

Aftercare

Providing the highest quality aftercare is just as important as the surgery itself, so we’re on hand to support you after your treatment, too. Your surgeon will help you decide how much time to take off work so that you can fully recover before returning to your usual everyday life. We’d recommend leaving it several weeks before doing any lifting or driving. You should also avoid smoking while you recover, as it slows down the healing process.

You’ll have a further post-operative appointment, so we can check that you’re healing well and are happy with the results of your procedure. Any scarring should be neat and hidden behind the ears and, although all surgery leaves scars, these should fade over time. If you’ve got any questions or concerns at all, you can contact our 24/7 helpline. For your peace of mind, all cosmetic surgery patients have access to our two-year aftercare programme.
