Time to focus on you

If you are looking for a procedure to help you achieve long-term weight loss, then Gastric sleeve surgery could be right for you. If you’re suffering with obesity, have exhausted all methods of diet and exercise, and have a body mass index (BMI) of 35 or over, a gastric sleeve could help you lose 55-60% of your excess body weight within 12-18 months.

A gastric sleeve procedure involves the removal of part of your stomach - creating a ‘sleeve’ which makes it smaller and limits the amount of food you can eat. The part of the stomach the surgeon removes is also the area that produces an appetite-increasing hormone, so hunger may be significantly reduced.

Shaping your future

There are many benefits that come from undergoing gastric sleeve surgery. Weighing less can mean it’s a lot easier to move around, allowing you to enjoy a whole spectrum of new activities - improving your general fitness and wellbeing. Conditions such as type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease and sleep apnoea may also improve after significant weight loss following gastric sleeve surgery.

After significant weight loss, you may feel an improvement in your mental health, with higher confidence and self-esteem, a more positive outlook, and an overall better quality of life.

Let’s delve into the detail

As a guide, these may include bleeding, infection, nausea, vomiting and constipation.

You, reimagined

You may be considering gastric sleeve surgery if you’re suffering with obesity, have a body mass index (BMI) of 35 or over, if you’re committed to making a lifestyle change, and if diet and exercise alone have proven unsuccessful in managing your weight. The gastric sleeve may lead to you getting the body you want and living a happier, healthier life.

FAQ

Gastric sleeve FAQs

More FAQs
How much does weight loss surgery cost?

The cost of gastric sleeve surgery can vary, so we advise booking an appointment for your free consultation with our surgeon assistant to talk about the cost of your procedure.

What is gastric band surgery?
Gastric band surgery is a surgical procedure where a silicone band is fitted around the top part of the stomach to help reduce hunger and appetite and therefore reduce your food intake. This eventually leads to long term weight loss. This procedure best for people suffering with obesity who have exhausted all other methods of weight loss.
What is gastric bypass surgery?
Gastric bypass surgery is designed to make the stomach smaller and bypass part of the intestine, which results in alterations in levels of gut hormones, significantly reducing appetite. You may want to consider a gastric bypass when diet and exercise has proved unsuccessful and you’re still overweight. A gastric bypass is non-reversible.
What is gastric sleeve surgery?
Gastric sleeve surgery removes a portion of the stomach permanently, creating a sleeve or tube-like shape. The stomach is usually made smaller, meaning your portion sizes will be reduced and you’ll have a lower calorie intake to aid weight loss. A gastric sleeve is non-reversible.
What is the recovery process after weight loss surgery?
You’ll usually need to stay in hospital for 2-3 nights following your weight loss surgery, and your surgeon will let you know when you can resume regular activities. Full recovery is expected to take up to 6 weeks, so strenuous activities are to be avoided during this time. Any pain you might have after the operation will be treated with pain relief medication and it will be important to take it easy in the first few weeks.

Next steps

We’re ready when you are

Your first appointment

The initial step is to talk to your surgeon assistant over the phone. You’ll be able to talk to them about why you’re considering gastric sleeve surgery, the likely costs and finance options, how much time you’ll probably need to take off work, and when you would like to have the surgery. Whenever you decide to book a surgery date, you can secure it for a minimum refundable deposit of £500. If you feel ready, we’ll book you an appointment for your free consultation with one of our specialist weight loss practitioners (a nurse or dietitian).

Your free consultation

This is where you can discuss your personal goals, find out whether you’re a suitable candidate for this surgery, and discover what the possible benefits and risks are, all with no obligation to go ahead. This surgical consultation can be carried out either over video chat or in person at your local clinic. Our specialist weight loss practitioners have received extensive training from our surgeons, so they’re extremely knowledgeable and are happy to answer all of your questions.

They’ll look at your medical history and discuss the outcome that you can anticipate with you, as well detailing as any potential complications involved in the procedure. If you feel ready to go ahead and book your surgery, you’ll then have a separate consultation with your surgeon. They’ll go through all the risks and benefits with you once more and confirm your suitability for surgery, as well as answer any further questions you may have. You’ll then be referred to a clinic nurse and a dietitian for pre-operative tests and assessments.

The surgery

On the day of your surgery, you’ll meet with your surgeon so you can go through the consent form and ask any last-minute questions. You’ll also be introduced to the rest of your surgical team before going into theatre. The procedure will take between 1-3 hours and will be carried out under general anaesthetic. Your surgeon will make 5 small keyhole incisions to insert the operating instruments, before removing around two thirds of your stomach. Your incisions will then be stitched and/or glued and you’ll be taken to our recovery room.

Recovery

Following the procedure, you’ll usually stay in hospital for one to two nights and will return home the next day. It’s expected that you’ll experience some swelling and pain when you wake up from surgery, so you’ll be provided with pain relief and looked after by our highly qualified nurses. You’ll receive intravenous drip hydration immediately after surgery to maintain your fluid levels until you can drink. You’ll remain on fluids for a period of time, and our surgeons and dietitians will advise further on post-operative nutrition and hydration.

Because the procedure is performed under a general anaesthetic, we advise that you arrange for someone to drive you home the next day, and that they stay with you until the effects of the anaesthetic have worn off.

Before you leave hospital, we’ll talk to you about looking after yourself at home and make a follow-up appointment for you. We’ll give you the number for our 24/7 patient helpline so you can speak to a member of our clinical team, day or night.

Full recovery from the procedure is expected to take around 4-6 weeks.

Aftercare

We believe that the highest quality aftercare is just as important as the surgery itself, so we’re here to support you throughout your recovery. You’ll need to give your body plenty of time to heal, and we’ll give you detailed guidance on the best way to do this. The recovery period will differ from person to person, but we recommend taking around 2 weeks off work. You’ll need to avoid strenuous activity, intense exercise and heavy lifting for around 6 weeks.

The gastric sleeve surgery itself is only the start of your journey, which is why we offer comprehensive weight loss surgery aftercare to all our patients. You’ll enjoy ongoing support from our team of dietitians, who’ll provide guidance on diet, nutrition and lifestyle changes after your sleeve gastrectomy. Our nursing team will monitor your healing process and advise on any medications you may need. The level of aftercare you receive will depend on the package you choose, and your surgeon assistant will help you find the right one for you. You can find out more about our packages on our website.
