Male hair transplant

What is a hair transplant?

A hair transplant is a surgical technique which takes healthy hair follicles from one area of the head and implants them on to bald or thinning areas.

Male hair loss and transplant

Whether you’ve recognised your hair is thinning on top or have a receding hairline, hair transplants have great success in the restoration of the natural hairline and can stop hair loss altogether for many men*.

Every man has different experiences of male hair loss, whether it’s the age they first start to experience hair loss or the speed at which hair thins or recedes.

Reasons for hair loss can be down to a number of factors but the most common are:

  • Genetic male pattern baldness
  • Stress
  • Sudden weight loss or poor diet
  • Low iron levels

The images below show an example of one of our hair transplant patients who underwent the FUE technique.

The images show the progress of the patient's results*, from the very start of their surgical journey to 12 months post procedure.

Male hair transplant procedures

We offer 2 types of hair transplant surgery which are performed under local anaesthetic - so you can leave one of our Transform hospitals the same day.

1. Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT)

This treatment, sometimes referred to as “strip harvesting”, involves taking an area of healthy hair and transplanting onto an area of hair loss in order to stimulate hair growth. After several months, you should start to see results. The treatment is suitable for those with longer hair and can usually be done in one half-day session.

2. Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE)

This form of hair transplant involves taking individual hair follicles from the back of the scalp. Fine incisions are then made in the area of hair loss or thinning hair and the follicle is inserted. This differs from FUT in that there is no linear scarring , but smaller individual scars. This means that it can be more suitable for those who wear their hair short. There also tends to be a comparably shorter downtime for this procedure.

After surgery & recovery

The transplanted area may feel sore for a few days and you might want to take a few days off work whilst your scalp heals. Before you leave hospital:

  • We’ll talk to you about how to look after the treated area at home
  • You’ll receive medication
  • You’ll be advised to make a follow-up appointment to check your progress

We recommend 1 week off work for recovery post hair transplant and advise against washing your hair until 48 hours, as well as avoiding strenuous activity.

Your surgeon may also advise on further reviews at 3, 6 and 12 months. You’ll also have our 24/7 patient helpline number to call if you have any worries.

We offer a comprehensive 3-year aftercare programme as standard for your complete peace of mind.

What our aftercare includes:

  • Free access to your surgeon at any time before or after your procedure
  • All review appointments are inclusive
  • Re-admission should you have any issues with your treatment and your surgeon deems it necessary for further surgery
