What is photoageing?

Sun damage is more likely to occur during the summer time. Sun damage will cause visible signs of ageing as well harming our skin cells – this is called photoageing.

The sun’s rays include both UVB and UVA rays. The UVB rays pass through the top layers of our skin (the epidermal layers) and stimulate melanin production which is our natural skin protection.

UVA rays can penetrate deep tissues and are responsible for causing damage to collagen fibres. We have to protect our collagen structure as that’s what gives internal strength and support to our skin.

Main symptoms of sun damage include:

  • Looseness of the skin
  • Lines and wrinkles
  • Sunburn

Other symptoms can include:

  • Pigmentation
  • Rough skin
  • Broken blood vessels

Preventing photoageing

Many signs of photo ageing can be avoided. If you use SPF every day you are following the easiest, most affordable and essential step to prevention.

How to choose the most effective sun protection?

Make sure it’s factor 50! The most efficient sun protection should combine 2 types of sun screens - physical and chemical:

  • Physical filters – creates an invisible layer to deflect sun rays
  • Chemical filters – absorb any radiation that isn’t deflected by the physical filters instead of damaging the cells

Unfortunately products from high street stores may provide poor protection. Ask your aesthetician about medical sun protection creams to feel safe all year round!

Both Epionce and Heliocare SPF creams are available at Transform. Ask your local clinic for more details.

Sun damage –when it’s already happened?

It’s always easier to prevent, but we also have tools to reverse the signs of ageing caused by photoageing.

Light therapy using laser or IPL can successfully improve your skin. Although they can be used only for patients with  skin types I – III, laser treatments are well known to:

  • Reduce pigmentation
  • Reduce redness and broken veins
  • Resurface the skin
  • Rejuvenate the skin

Depending on the skin condition we can choose specific wavelengths to target problematic skin layers for the best results.

Skin rejuvenation treatments

At Transform, selected clinics offer a treatment called Ultherapy that uses ultrasound to warm up deep tissues for skin rejuvenation. It is often described as a non-surgical facelift.  From the first day of your treatment your skin can start showing signs of improvement and will continue for another 90 days and beyond. The benefits of this treatment include:

  • Tighter and thicker skin
  • More youthful shape
  • Plumped fine lines

Come to meet our experienced practitioners who are clinical experts in carrying out the Ultherapy procedure.

What about topical products?

If you prefer to use skin care products then the best option for your skin will be Obagi Nu – derm System. It’s based on key ingredients such as hydroquinone and Tretinoin and is a 3 month home treatment that guarantees visible results.

Hydroquinone is a natural ingredient which has proven strong brightening properties.
