Move over ladies, here come the men!

We’ve seen a steady increase in the number of male patients coming to us over the last 5-10 years so it’s fair to say that men are increasingly getting in on the act when it comes to looking and feeling good about themselves.

Here’s some tips and advice specifically aimed at all you aesthetically advanced males out there. Ladies, feel free to share these nuggets of wisdom with the men in your lives.

Men and their skin!

Exposure to UV rays and environmental pollution can result in congested pores, lack lustre skin and deep wrinkles for both men and women. If you work outdoors, the risks are heightened.

The vast majority of men tend to shave a couple of times a week which can leave the skin more sensitive and prone to inflamed hair follicles than people who don’t.

Men also are at more risk of developing acne, especially when they hit puberty, due to the high levels of testosterone. Men are also more likely to suffer from rosacea and acne rosacea.

On the subject of hair and testosterone, men have stronger hair follicles all over the body, which for some can mean excessive body hair e.g. back, shoulders and chest. We see lots of men who fall into this category suffering from low self esteem, confidence and intimacy issues.

However, it’s not all doom and gloom, on the upside, men are known to have stronger and thicker skin than their female counterparts which means for some, they’ll age better as time goes on.

Men bring with them their own skin challenges and here’s how we can help.

Microdermabrasion and Peels

Men suffering from congested and dull skin are ideal candidates for skin peels and microdermabrasion treatments.

As a general rule, peels are usually carried out in a course of 3 and microdermabrasion in a course of 6. However because men’s skin is generally thicker, more treatments may be required to achieve the desired results.

A microdermabrasion treatment involves passing a wand with a diamond tip over the skin, whilst applying suction, which in turn encourages cell turnover.

Mild to moderate peels require no preparation at home which makes them a perfect ‘walk in’ treatment. Peels containing salicylic acid are fantastic for treating congested and acne affected skin due to the anti-bacterial and ant-inflammatory properties of the acid.

Malic acid which is derived from apples, is a great skin brightening ingredient. It gives the skin a lovely glow and can initiate skin cells rejuvenation.

Light peels available at Transform include the Obagi Blue Peel Radiance Peel  and Epionce Lite Refresh Peel. Take a look at our skin peel graph to find out which peel would best suit your skin problem.

IPL – Light Therapy Treatment

If you have any pigmentation marks or spots, IPL is the treatment for you. Pigment markings come about when the skin has been exposed to the sun without any protection resulting in the over-production of melanin. The photo-damaged skin will appear darker after the initial treatment but will gradually begin to fade.

IPL is also great for helping with facial redness. The IPL light targets areas with an excessive blood supply and will cause indirect damage initiating the body’s natural healing response. This will result in a reduction of redness.

IPL light therapy is relatively pain free, requires no down time and a course consists of 3 treatment sessions. All patients have to have an initial patch test before being deemed suitable for the treatment. It is important to avoid sun exposure whilst undergoing treatment and it is essential that an SPF 50 is worn on a daily basis.

 Before After IPL treatment

Ulthera uses ultrasound technology  to initiate the regeneration of collagen deep within the skin. The treatment takes 3-6months before any results are visible and as such requires a certain level of patience from the patient.

Commonly dubbed the ‘non surgical facelift’, this is a very popular treatment for men - the results are extremely natural and no down time is required.

Ulthera can be used on the brow, the mid-lower face and the neck area.

Laser Hair Reduction

Laser hair removal can dramatically reduce hair thickness and growth and is a very effective treatment for anyone suffering from excessive body hair.

The laser targets the hair bulb which results in the reduction of the hair follicle size and in some cases, the destruction of the hair follicle altogether. We recommend a course of 8 treatments, however in certain cases more treatments may be required. This is dependent on the individual and any underlying hormonal levels and expectations.

We advise all laser hair removal patients to step away from the wax or hair removal creams and to only shave in between treatments. Patients have to have a initial patch test to determine their suitability for the treatment and treatments are carried out every 6-8weeks. During this time, sun exposure must be avoided.

Botox and Fillers

Compared to women, men have stronger facial muscles and expressions which means deeper lines and wrinkles.

Step in Botox. Botox is one of the most effective treatments for line and wrinkle smoothing and is administered via a series of injections. From the day of the treatment, results slowly develop over a period of 2 weeks. The individual’s body metabolism and muscle strength will determine how long the treatment will last. On average, it lasts between 3-4 months before the results start to wear off.

Juvederm is a range of Hyaluronic Acid based fillers that we offer here at Transform. Fillers are used to reduce the appearance of lines and wrinkles, and to restore the loss of volume caused by ageing.

Popular treatment areas include the cheeks and nose to mouth lines. Filler treatment lasts on average between 6-12 months depending on the amount of product used and the area being treated.

Whatever your skin concerns, there are a wealth of effective non surgical treatments available to help deal with most issues.

No excuses gentlemen, the aesthetic world awaits your arrival!
