5 cosmetic surgery myths

Cosmetic surgery myths

Many people have opinions about cosmetic surgery, however, in a lot of cases those opinions are not backed by fact but are based on common misconceptions.

Cosmetic surgery is only for women

Surprisingly men represent a growing new market in cosmetic surgery. Data released by BAAPS (British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons) in February 2018 confirm that 2,417 surgical procedures were carried out for men in 2017, a rise of 0.3% from 2016 and that cosmetic surgery for men accounted for 9% of the overall market in 2017. Our most popular procedures for men are male chest reduction, liposuction, rhinoplasty (nose job) along with a range of non-surgical treatments such as Botox, CoolSculpting and laser hair removal.

Breast implant sizes look the same for every patient

Our advice is not to not get too hung up on the CC (the volume) of the breast implants. There are several factors that affect the overall result of a breast implant procedure. The size of the chest wall, the size of the breast and amount of existing breast tissue as well as the height and weight of the patient.  As patients obviously vary in size, height, weight and the amount of breast tissue they have, the implants will appear different on patients of different size.

Liposuction will help me lose weight

Liposuction is designed to treat stubborn areas of fat that do not respond to diet and exercise alone. Fat removal is most suitable for people who are in good health and maintain a fair level of fitness but suffer from unwanted fat deposits and uneven contours, it is not a weight loss tool. If patients are not suitable for liposuction, we may be able to recommend other surgeries that are specifically designed for weight loss.

Cosmetic surgery is only for rich people

Cosmetic surgery is no longer just for the rich and famous, that stereotype is long gone, here at Transform we see patients from all walks of life and income levels. Some of our patients find surgery affordable but this is not the case for everyone and many choose to finance their procedures with a loan, credit card or by using savings.  Transform offer patients ways to spread the cost of treatment at 0% per annum fixed, representative 0% APR between 1 and 5 years.

Breast implants last forever

Typically if you ask the question, the reply is ‘ten years’ but this is not a set rule. This response is most likely governed by the fact that most manufacturers offer a ten-year warranty on their implants. We could compare a breast implant warranty to that of an electrical item warranty; whilst one item may need replacing after 3 years, others may be absolutely fine after the warranty has expired. Our advice is that breast implants should not be considered a permanent device and that sooner or later patients will need to have them removed and replaced in their lifetime. The good news is that if breast implants do rupture, leak or cause rippling this is not a life-threatening situation and that patients should contact their surgeon for further advice.
