Laser hair removal for men is becoming increasingly popular each year, as more and more men discover the benefits of laser and IPL (Intense Pulse Light) treatments. It offers a long-lasting solution to unwanted body hair, resulting in less time waxing and shaving.
Laser and IPL hair removal can be used almost anywhere on the body, is suitable for all skin types and, with regular top-up treatments, can have long-lasting results. Popular areas for men’s laser hair removal include the ears, nipples, chest and back.
So, how does it work? The procedure is designed to destroy the base of the hair follicle that is the source of new hair growth, making the treated hair fall out without damaging the surrounding tissue.

You’ll have the opportunity to ask your practitioner or nurse any questions as part of your consultation, but to start the ball rolling here are the answers to some that our patients most frequently ask.
Thanks to our advanced technology lasers, we should be able to perform laser hair removal on anyone, including those with darker skin tones, as long as you have a suitable medical history and don’t have a reaction to the patch test.
Most people require six to eight sessions to get the results they want, but your practitioner will be able to advise exactly how many are right for you. Sessions are normally scheduled between four and six weeks apart, and you’ll notice that less and less hair grows back each time.
Winter is the best time to have laser hair removal treatment because it’s easier to avoid direct sunlight, which can damage sensitised skin. However, you can have laser hair treatment or top-ups at any time of year, as long as you don’t have a tan. As it takes several months to fully complete a course of treatment, it’s important to plan ahead, so if you want hair-free skin in time for summer, you probably need to book your first session for January or February.
You’ll need to keep the treated area out of the sun for approximately two weeks before and after your laser hair removal course, depending on your skin type. Your practitioner will advise you on what precautions you need to take and for how long. For darker skins, you may need to avoid sunlight for six weeks before and after your treatment to avoid marks appearing on your skin.
For your first consultation and patch test, you should leave hair unshaven so that the practitioner can properly assess the hair and take accurate before photos. After that, we advise that you shave before each treatment session.
IPL (Intense Pulse Light) treatment is an alternative long-term hair removal method that you might consider if you have light-coloured skin. IPL technology can also be used to treat a variety of skin conditions, including thread veins, sun spots and rosacea.
IPL hair removal works in a similar way to laser hair removal it uses light to heat up and destroy hair follicles, and it takes between six and eight sessions to get the area completely free of hair. But there’s one important difference IPL hair removal is more intense and goes deeper into the skin, which means it’s usually only suitable for those with light skin types.
To treat your skin type, our practitioners will use a longer wavelength, which will destroy the hair in its follicle. This disrupts the cycle of hair regrowth, without damaging your skin, resulting in effective hair removal.
We always perform a patch test on all patients to ensure the treatment will be suitable. Our experienced practitioners will test a small area of your skin using the laser. Your laser settings will then be recorded before waiting 2 to 14 days to assess the outcome of the patch test (the darker your skin, usually the longer we need to wait).
When you come to Transform, the entire experience is designed around you and your needs. We’ll listen carefully to your aspirations for being the best you, and you’ll receive all the advice and support you need throughout your journey with us. Here’s a step-by-step guide to what you can expect.
The first step is to meet your patient advisor. You’ll be able to talk to them about why you’re considering hair removal treatment, whether laser or IPL would be right for you, the likely costs and finance options, and when you’d like to have the treatment. If you feel ready, we’ll then book you in for your free consultation with one of our professional practitioners or nurses.
At your free consultation, your professional practitioner or nurse will ask you about the results you want to achieve. They’ll assess your skin type for suitability to either laser or IPL – both methods provide long-lasting results for hair removal. Laser treatment uses a continuous laser to very gradually heat hair follicles to the point where the hair falls out. Laser treatment can be more suitable for darker skin, which has a higher level of melanin, the pigment that gives skin its colour, so it absorbs light at a faster rate than fair skin. The advanced technology lasers we use for darker skin tones at Transform have the ability to tell the difference between melanin in the skin and the melanin in the hair to precisely target the area to be treated. IPL (Intense Pulse Light) treatment uses individual pulses of laser light to precisely target hair follicles and is suitable for a wide range of hair and skin types. IPL can also be used to treat a variety of skin conditions including thread veins, sun spots and rosacea. Although risks are minimal, our practitioner will explain any risks and conduct a patch test. You’ll then need to wait at least two weeks before starting your treatment, so we can make sure that you have not had an adverse reaction in the area we’ve tested. If your patch test is satisfactory, you can book your next appointment, at which your practitioner will recommend a personal treatment plan and, if you feel ready to go ahead, start the course of laser hair removal. You can discuss every aspect of your treatment with no obligation to go ahead. Our practitioners and nurses are extremely knowledgeable and happy to answer any questions you have.
On the day of your treatment, you’ll be free to ask any last-minute questions with your practitioner or nurse. They will apply a cooling gel before gliding the laser machine across the skin. You’ll feel a slight tingling sensation and you may feel some discomfort. After they’ve finished your treatment, your practitioner will apply a cooling gel and then an SPF sunscreen to sooth and protect the treated area. Each treatment can take between 15 minutes and two hours, depending on the amount of hair being treated. Our friendly, expert team will do everything they can to keep you comfortable throughout your course of treatments and ensure you’re free of unwanted hair and feeling great as soon as possible.
Recovery times vary after a laser hair removal session, but you should be able to leave the clinic as soon as your treatment has been completed and go about your normal day-to-day activities. We recommend that you avoid doing any activities or using products that could irritate the skin in the area where youu2019ve been treated. You should also try to stay out of the sun and apply SPF skin protection regularly.
We believe that the highest quality aftercare is just as important as the treatment itself, so we’re here to support you. If you have any questions or concerns at all, you can contact our 24/7 helpline. Effective treatment is usually achieved over a course of six to eight treatments. These will be spaced about four to six weeks apart and you’ll soon notice a reduction in hair growth after each treatment. Once your treatment programme is complete, you’ll be able to enjoy smooth skin for many months. We recommend a top-up treatment once a year to ensure the area stays hair-free.
At Transform, all our practitioners are CTC-registered and receive ongoing training in the very latest laser hair removal techniques. We also use the very highest quality equipment to ensure your treatment is effective including Lightsheer, Quantum, Lumenis One, Soprano and Harmony.
You’ll notice that your hair grows back finer with each laser hair removal session, reducing by approximately 10-15% with each treatment until it disappears entirely. We recommend a top-up treatment once a year to maintain the smooth results.
Yes, shaving is fine. In fact, we’ll ask you to shave between treatments as it makes it easier to perform the treatment, but you shouldn’t wax as this removes the hair from the follicle so there’s nothing for the lasers to target.
