Sclerotherapy Frequently Asked Questions

Sclerotherapy treatment can help significantly improve spider and reticular veins. Success rates are high and clinical studies have shown the treatment success rate to be over 90%. You can expect to see the true results of the Sclerotherapy treatment around 3 months after your treatment.

With Sclerotherapy treatment, you will not need to take any time off work, and you can continue with your usual activities. It is recommended to avoid intense exercise for 48 hours and to avoid direct sun exposure for at least 4 weeks.

Compression tights are purchased by the patient and worn directly after treatment for up to 1 week, however, if the leg thread veins are severe than the Practitioner may discuss wearing these longer. You should always follow the advice of your Practitioner and keep the compression on for the period required as it can help you achieve the most effective results. During the recovery process, the spider and reticular veins will have been inflamed which can cause them to look worse at this stage, but that’s no reason to panic as it is completely normal and part of your healing. You may need more treatments following your initial treatment, this will be discussed with your Practitioner during your consultation, so you know what to expect. A further treatment may be carried out after a minimum of 4-6 weeks, and in some cases this might be longer.

The compression stockings hold the walls of the vein together and prevents blood from seeping back into the vein. You should keep the compression stockings and bandage on continuously for 5 days. After this, you can remove the pads and bandage and replace the stocking which should be worn for a further 7 days. During this 7-day period, you can remove the stocking to shower, and you can remove it at night if you wish. You must bring your stocking to following visits.

As with all medical aesthetics treatments, there are rare side effects that can occur. For Sclerotherapy this includes bruising, ulceration, raised red areas, small skin sores, darkened skin in the form of lines or spots and multiple tiny red blood vessels. These will typically go away within a few days to several weeks. Further complications that are less common include inflammation, blood clots, air bubbles or allergic reaction although these complications are very uncommon and can be treated effectively.

The size and severity of your veins are what will determine which treatment will be most suitable for you. Here at Transform, we offer Microsclerotherapy specifically for spider and reticular veins, but for larger varicose veins you may need to be referred to a vascular specialist.

Microsclerotherapy, available at Transform can be highly effective at minimising the appearance of spider veins and reticular veins which are often found on the legs. They can be treated by using small quantities of a sterile solution which is injected into the visible veins.

Microsclerotherapy is a treatment that involves injecting a sterile solution and prescription-only medicine, known as a sclerosant, into the vein. This breaks down the lining of the vein wall and triggers a healing action, which will cause the vein to eventually close off and die. This is completely harmless as your blood will just find a new route to travel.
