Nose surgery

When you live life to the full, it can take its toll. Injuries from rugby, football, boxing and other sports are a common reason that men choose to have nose surgery, to straighten or change the shape of their nose.

There are many reasons for choosing nose surgery, also called rhinoplasty or simply a ‘nose job’. You may have had an injury that has left it looking distorted, you may feel your nose is too big for your facial features, or you have a bump or bulbous tip. Whatever your reason, nose surgery can change the appearance of your nose to make it smaller or reshape the bridge, septum, tip and nostrils. Here at Transform, our team guides thousands of men each year through their surgery. Get in touch and start your journey to being the best you.

You’ll have the opportunity to ask your surgeon any questions as part of your consultation, but to start the ball rolling here are the answers to some that our patients most frequently ask.

Nose surgery FAQs

As a responsible provider of cosmetic surgery, we understand that each individual's procedure is different and will be tailored specifically around the patient. Because of this, we place a great deal of importance on our free face-to-face, no obligation consultations. Following our consultation process your patient advisor will provide a detailed pricing overview around the particular procedure. Please view our pricing and finance page to read more about our flexible credit options, available via our partnership with a specialist financial provider. More info here.

Nose surgery usually takes around two hours under general anaesthetic.

You may need to stay overnight in one of our hospitals. We’ll discuss what we think is best with you before we book your surgery.

Nose surgery is suitable for most people, but we’ll take a full medical history and complete a pre-op screening to make sure you’re physically fit enough before we go ahead with your surgery.

Yes, it can. Your Transform surgeon will talk to you about your symptoms and examine you so that they can advise on how they can help.

Recovery varies from patient to patient. Any incisions will be closed with dissolvable stitches, which will disappear on their own after a week or so. It’ll be at least two weeks before the bruising fades and several months before your nose settles into its new shape following surgery. Before you leave hospital, we’ll advise you on what to do – and not to do – to ensure you recover quickly. You’ll also have several post-op appointments to ensure you’re healing well and are pleased with the results.

As it takes up to two weeks for the bruising and swelling to go down after your op, many of our patients choose to book between a week and a fortnight off work.

Most rhinoplasty incisions are made inside the nostrils, so you won’t be able to see any scars. However, for some procedures your surgeon may make an incision in the skin between your nostrils, which is called ‘open rhinoplasty’. You may also require small incisions to be made at either side of your nostrils, which will leave very fine scars. Your surgeon will fully explain the type of surgery you’ll be having and outline any expected scarring so you’ll know what to expect.

As with all surgical procedures, there are some risks attached, but we’ll fully explain these to you so you can feel as confident and reassured as possible before going ahead.

More details on nose surgery

When you come to Transform, the entire experience is designed around you and your needs. We’ll listen carefully to your aspirations for being the best you, and you’ll receive all the advice and support you need throughout your journey with us. Here’s a step-by-step guide to what you can expect.

Nose surgery step-by-step

The first step is to meet your patient advisor. You’ll be able to talk to them about why you’re considering nose surgery, the likely costs and finance options, how much time you’ll probably need to take off work, and when you’d like to have the surgery. If you feel ready, we’ll then book you in for your free consultation with one of our surgeons.

At your free consultation, your surgeon will ask you about the results you want to achieve from the surgery. You can discuss every aspect of your nose surgery – from the different procedures to the benefits and risks –with no obligation to go ahead. Our surgeons are extremely knowledgeable and happy to answer any questions you have. There are several nose alteration procedures, which tackle different concerns. Reduction rhinoplasty makes the nose smaller, septorhinoplasty alters the external appearance and the internal septum, and rhinotip alters the tip of the nose and nostrils. Your surgeon will discuss the right surgery method for you and the results you can realistically expect. If you feel ready to go ahead and book your surgery, they’ll then refer you to a clinic nurse who’ll perform some pre-op tests and procedures.

In most cases, nose surgery takes around two hours under general anaesthetic, which means you may need to stay overnight in one of our hospitals. On the day of your surgery, you’ll meet with your surgeon so you can go through the consent form and ask any last-minute questions. You’ll then be introduced to the rest of your surgical team before going into theatre.   During the procedure, your surgeon will make incisions in your nose. These are usually made inside the nose, so you won’t be able to see any scars, but for some procedures an incision in the skin between your nostrils may be made, or at either side of your nostrils, which will leave very fine scars. Any incisions will be closed with dissolvable stitches, which will disappear after a week or so.

We’ll be here throughout the recovery process to help you recuperate quickly and safely. Your surgeon will check that you’re properly recovered from the operation before discharging you. At this stage, you’ll feel very sore from your operation and won’t be able to drive, so you’ll need to make sure that you’ve made arrangements to get home.   Your nose is likely to be bruised and swollen and you may also have bruising around the eyes. We’ll provide pain relief to help with any discomfort. You may have dressings inside each nostril at first, which will prevent you from breathing through your nose. We’ll take these out before you go home. You might also have a splint over your nose to help support it, which you’ll need to keep in place for around a week.

We believe that the highest quality aftercare is just as important as the surgery itself, so we’re here to support you. Before you leave hospital your nurse will give you some advice on caring for your nose and arrange your post-op appointment at the clinic for around a week later. This is when we’ll remove your splint if you have one. You’ll also see your surgeon for a review appointment around six weeks after your surgery to check on your progress and arrange any further aftercare you might need. Recovery varies from patient to patient, but it will be at least two weeks before the bruising begins to fade and several months before your nose settles into its new shape, so please don’t be alarmed by your immediate post-op appearance. Many of our patients decide to book some time off work during this period. If you have any questions or concerns at all, you can contact our 24/7 helpline. All patients have access to our three-year aftercare programme as standard and you’ll have the option to extend cover to up to 10 years.
