ACCOUNTABILITIES

Assess patient needs, planning, implementing, documenting and evaluating a programme of care which is evidence based utilising all available resources taking into consideration lifestyle, gender and cultural background. Maintain privacy, dignity and confidentiality at all times.

  • To maintain a patient centred approach using the named nurse when planning care, involving patients, carers and members of the multi-disciplinary team in care decisions, maintaining high standards of evidence-based care.
  • Organise own workload to ensure that the interests of the patients are met.
  • To occasionally deputise for the Ward Sister/Charge Nurse in their absence and taking charge of the management of daily responsibilities including work allocation and deployment and supervision of staff, to ensure the smooth running of the area.
  • Ensure high standards are promoted and maintained within the nursing team through assisting other members of staff in planning, priority setting and decision making to ensure that they meet patient’s needs.
  • Monitor standards of care by direct observation and by giving and receiving accurate signed and dated nursing reports and contributing to the performance review of nursing associates, ensuring that they develop in line with company objectives. Address inappropriate behaviour in others in a professional manner, being constructive in comments and feedback to colleagues regarding personal and professional issues.
  • Act as a positive role model by representing the values and beliefs of the nursing profession as well as the values of the organisation. Positively support Hospital policies, procedures, guidelines and initiatives.
  • Engage in effective communication with patients, relatives and visitors.
  • Engage in effective verbal, non-verbal and written communication with all members of the multidisciplinary clinical team, liaising closely with all clinical staff involved in the care of the patient, promoting discussion and attending ward and hospital meetings as appropriate.
  • Support the in team building and the Ward Manager and Ward Sisters in the motivation and coaching of nursing associates, assisting in the orientation and training of new nursing staff and maintaining the direction and cohesiveness of the nursing teams through effective leadership.
  • Adopt and develop the concept of customer excellent care and challenge any interaction that fails to deliver a quality of service to internal and external customers
  • Take responsibility for personal and professional development, reflecting on and learning from own practice and contributing to the continuing development of the ward facility.
  • Occasionally act as an effective shift co-ordinator where appropriate.
  • Promote the efficient and effective use of ward resources, participating in cost improvement projects.
  • Assist with the implementation and ongoing review of the multidisciplinary care pathways identifying and discussing nursing and patient problems, rationale and research with team members.
  • Participate in projects to improve cost effectiveness, customer and patient care.
  • Contribute to monitoring activities and audit, giving appropriate, timely feedback to colleagues.
  • Abide by legal requirements and statutory rules relating to practice.
  • Be aware of national and local initiatives and issues that may impact on nursing.
  • To carry out any other duty that reasonably falls within the general nature and level of responsibility of the post.
  • Ensure safe working conditions, the health, safety and welfare of all staff, colleagues and visitors and to comply at all times with health and safety policies and procedures
