Consultant Laparoscopic, Upper GI and Bariatric Surgeon Mr Rao specialises in upper GI (gastrointestinal) and bariatric surgery for weight loss, including gastric sleeve and gastric bypass. His practice also involves key hole surgery for hernias and gall stones.
After gaining his medical degree from the University of Kerala, Mr Rao took up posts in hospitals in India before moving to the UK. He gained extensive experience which led him to become a Specialist Registrar in Upper GI in 2009 and a Consultant in 2013 at University Hospital of North Midlands NHS Trust, a position he still holds today.
Already an expert in his field, Mr Rao is committed to continued professional development and attends many courses to ensure that his skillset is up to date. Through exposure to the latest surgical techniques, he has acquired advanced skills in a range of procedures to the benefit of his patients. Mr Rao is a member of several related organisations including The British Obesity and Metabolic Society, and he is actively engaged in medical research, having contributed to numerous articles and publications.
Mr Rao is an Honorary Clinical Lecturer at Keele University, and is also a Regional Surgical Advisor and member of the Surgical Speciality Board for the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh. He is also a faculty for the laparoscopic courses of the Royal College of Surgeons of England and regularly teaches surgical trainees in acquiring advanced laparoscopic skills. The wide range of experience in varied healthcare environments he has gained during his career has shaped his clinical approach, with patient safety and wellbeing at its centre.
Our surgeons are hand-picked for their advanced skillset and experience in their designated field. We never compromise in our patient care. All our surgeons work with us under practising privileges agreements and are registered with the General Medical Council (GMC), holding a Licence to Practice. Our surgeons have an annual appraisal and continue to develop professionally during their careers. Once every 5 years, all doctors go through a GMC revalidation process. They are granted Practising Privileges via our Clinical Governance and Compliance Committee, and they carry their own professional indemnity insurance.
While our surgeons and clinical teams have carried out thousands of procedures during their careers, they never forget that it may be your first. It’s our aim to make your experience as positive as your outcome after treatment.
