Choosing nose surgery
Nose surgery, or rhinoplasty, is a surgical procedure for changing the size or reshaping your nose. There are many different reasons for choosing rhinoplasty - you may feel your nose is too big for your facial features, or you have a bump or bulbous tip. Or perhaps you’ve had an accident or injury that’s left it looking distorted. Whatever the reason, rhinoplasty, or nose surgery, can change the appearance of your nose.

What is rhinoplasty?
Rhinoplasty, commonly referred to as a nose job, is the medical term for any surgery that alters the appearance of your nose. There are several nose alteration procedures which tackle different concerns to achieve your individual aims. Your surgeon will discuss the right rhinoplasty method for you and the results you can realistically expect*.
*Cosmetic surgery results and benefits can vary and are different for each individual. As such, Transform cannot guarantee specific results.
Nose surgery can involve:
- Reduction rhinoplasty – the nose is made smaller. This will involve reshaping the bridge and tip of the nose as well as the nostrils. Some bone and cartilage may also be removed.
- Septorhinoplasty – the external appearance of the nose is altered (as above) as well as alteration of the internal septum.
- Rhinotip – the tip of the nose and nostrils are altered.
What the procedure involves
In most cases this procedure takes around two hours under general anaesthetic. This means you may need to stay overnight in one of our Transform hospitals.
Most nose surgery incisions are made inside the nose, so you won’t be able to see any scars. However, for some rhinoplasty procedures your surgeon may make an incision in the skin between your nostrils; this is called ‘open rhinoplasty’. You may also require small incisions to be made at either side of your nostrils, which will leave very fine scars.
Any incisions will be closed with dissolvable stitches which will disappear on their own after a week or so.
Your nose is likely to be bruised and swollen after a nose operation and you may also have bruising around the eyes. We’ll provide pain relief to help with any discomfort.
You may have dressings inside each nostril at first, which will prevent you from breathing through your nose. We’ll take these out before you go home. You might also have a splint over your nose to help support it; you’ll need to keep this in place for around a week.
Rhinoplasty recovery varies from patient to patient. It will be at least two weeks before the bruising begins to fade and several months before your nose settles into its new shape following the surgery. So please don’t be alarmed by your immediate post-operative appearance. Read our rhinoplasty recovery page for more information about recovering from nose reshaping surgery.
