WHAT IS CARPAL TUNNEL TREATMENT?

Carpal tunnel treatment is a surgery that can relieve the symptoms of carpal tunnel syndrome. Carpal tunnel syndrome is a common condition that can happen when the carpal tunnel (narrow passageway inside your wrist) swells. This can cause aches in your fingers and hands, along with numbness, pins and needles, and difficulty gripping.

The surgery can be done as an outpatient procedure, so you’ll be able to go home the same day. Your surgeon will begin by numbing your wrist with a local anaesthetic injection to minimise any pain. An incision is then made in your hand, and the ligament around the carpal tunnel is cut. This increases the size of the tunnel and therefore reduces pressure on the nerve. Your incision is then closed with stitches.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF CARPAL TUNNEL TREATMENT?

If you suffer from carpal tunnel syndrome, you might find simple tasks like gripping and pointing painful. The pressure on the nerves and ligaments of your wrist can cause pain and discomfort, which carpal tunnel surgery can relieve. The benefits of this procedure include:

  • Pain relief
  • Easier to perform simple tasks with your hands
  • Improved hand function, grip and control.

ARE THERE ANY RISKS?

All surgical procedures carry some degree of risk, so it’s important that you are aware of these before you go ahead. This means that you can compare them with the benefits of having the procedure and make the best decision for you.

You’ll be able to ask more in-depth questions about potential complications during your consultations.
