WHAT IS CIRCUMCISION?

This procedure involves the complete removal of the foreskin. It is usually carried out under general anaesthetic. A circular incision is made in the foreskin, just below the head of the penis, and the whole foreskin is removed, leaving the glans exposed. Dissolvable stitches are then used to attach the skin of the penis to below the glans. These will disappear after approximately two to three weeks.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF CIRCUMCISION?

Circumcision is typically performed for one of the following reasons:

• To provide a solution to a tight, non-retractable foreskin

• To prevent recurring infections under the foreskin

• To combat skin disease on the foreskin and head of the penis (the glans)

• To remove warty lesions on the foreskin

• To remove pre-cancerous or cancerous lesions on the foreskin.

ARE THERE ANY RISKS?

During your consultations with your expert healthcare advisor, any risks will be discussed, and you will be able to talk through any concerns you may have. The risks and after-effects of circumcision vary from patient to patient. As a guide, those related to circumcision can include:

• Swelling of the penis (which typically subsides a few days after treatment)

• Increased sensitivity of the glans for up to two weeks

• Permanent altered or reduced sensation in the glans

• Bleeding from the wound

• Swelling of excess skin requiring further surgery.

IS IT RIGHT FOR ME?

Circumcision surgery may be an option for you if you have experienced problems including those due to phimosis (a tight, non-retractable foreskin), had recurring infections in your foreskin and head of your penis, or have cancer of the penis.

More FAQs
WHAT CAN I EXPECT AFTER TREATMENT?

Your penis will have some swelling and bruising, which may last several days. Over-the-counter painkillers can help with any discomfort. Because it is exposed, it is likely that the head of the penis will feel overly sensitive for the first week or two. It may also dry out and scab over. Applying Vaseline should help with both decreasing sensitivity and counteracting dryness. When this has settled, it is likely that your penis will feel slightly less sensitive than before the procedure. The dissolvable stitches should disappear within two to three weeks. It can take up to six weeks before the penis settles down into its final cosmetic appearance.

WHAT SHOULD I WEAR FOLLOWING MY PROCEDURE?

You should wear clothes that are comfortable for you, whether they are loose-fitting or a more snug fit for support, for the first few days after your circumcision surgery.

WHAT CAN I DO TO HELP SPEED UP MY RECOVERY?

Try to make sure that you keep the area dry for 48 hours following your surgery. Avoid taking baths, and do not go swimming for two to three weeks after your surgery.

WHEN CAN I RE-START SEXUAL ACTIVITY?

Although you will continue to get erections as normal after the procedure, you should refrain from sexual activity for four weeks. You may feel tightness or discomfort around the scar tissue when you first get erections, but this should regain its usual elasticity within a few months.
