Dr Alan Li

Mr Alan Li is a highly experienced Consultant Upper Gastrointestinal, Bariatric and General Surgeon with more than 15 years of consultant-level experience. He specialises in weight loss surgery, reflux surgery, upper gastrointestinal cancer surgery and advanced minimally invasive procedures, helping patients achieve improved health and quality of life through personalised treatment plans and modern surgical techniques.

Educated in Oxford, Mr Li qualified as a doctor from the University of Bristol Medical School in 1990. His early surgical training included positions in Manchester and Leeds, where he worked as both a Lecturer and University Tutor in Surgery. He was also awarded prestigious research fellowships by the Medical Research Council and the Royal College of Surgeons, reflecting his commitment to clinical excellence and innovation.

Following specialist training in Yorkshire and Scotland, Mr Li was awarded a travelling fellowship to the National Cancer Centre Hospital in Tokyo, Japan, where he further developed advanced techniques in gastric cancer surgery. He subsequently undertook a prestigious Senior Clinical Fellowship at Princess Alexandra Hospital in Brisbane, Australia, where he gained extensive experience in pioneering laparoscopic and thoracoscopic surgery for oesophageal and gastric cancer, reflux disease and hiatus hernia surgery.

After returning to the UK, Mr Li was appointed as a Consultant Surgeon and later joined Manchester Royal Infirmary as an Upper Gastrointestinal, Bariatric, Laparoscopic and General Surgeon. During his time there, he became Senior Lead of the Oesophago-Gastric Unit and helped oversee significant growth in the service, including the expansion of minimally invasive cancer surgery and the development of a comprehensive NHS bariatric surgery programme.

Mr Li is currently a senior oesophago-gastric and bariatric surgeon at Salford Royal Hospital, where he specialises in cancer surgery, reflux surgery, bariatric surgery and complex revision procedures. Alongside his clinical work, he is actively involved in training and mentoring surgeons and senior clinical fellows. He remains committed to innovation through ongoing robotic surgery training and believes strongly in delivering compassionate, individualised and holistic patient care.
