Governance

GMC number 3627985 · Plastic and cosmetic surgery · FRCS since 1992, full time in cosmetic surgery since 2010

Mr Bhatty advises Transform on clinical standards and case suitability. He is one of the senior clinical voices we turn to when a case needs a second opinion, when a pathway needs reviewing, or when a policy needs a clinician’s judgement and not an administrator’s.

Qualifications and training

Mr Bhatty studied medicine at Karachi University before coming to the UK for postgraduate training in plastic surgery. He gained his Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons in 1992, and trained across NHS hospitals under the Royal College of Surgeons and the British Association of Plastic Surgeons.

He moved into cosmetic surgery full time as a consultant in 2010. He is also certified in hand surgery by the Pulvertaft Hand Centre in Derby, and has published research papers and lectured in the field.

What a Medical Advisor does at Transform

Our Medical Advisors sit alongside the Medical Director and bring specialty specific expertise into our governance work. The role includes:

  • Reviewing complex or borderline cases referred through our MDT process
  • Contributing to our Medical Advisory Committee and to clinical policy
  • Advising on surgical technique, pathway design and post-operative protocols
  • Supporting audit and outcome review
  • Providing clinical input on patient information and consent materials, so what we tell you matches what your surgeon would tell you

Where his experience is most useful to us

Two areas in particular.

Body contouring after significant weight loss. These are among the most technically demanding cases we see, and the ones where realistic expectation setting matters most. Skin quality, weight history, nutritional status and the number of stages needed all change what surgery can achieve. Mr Bhatty has spent years on exactly this work, which is why post weight loss cases often come to him for review.

Facial and eyelid surgery under local anaesthetic. He has extensive experience operating on the face and eyelids without general anaesthesia, which opens up options for patients whose health makes a general anaesthetic higher risk. That is a governance question as much as a surgical one, and having someone who has done it at volume shapes how we assess those patients.

He also carries out reconstructive surgery on humanitarian missions in underserved communities, which is not a Transform activity but does say something about the kind of surgeon advising us.
