Mr Martin Richardson

Mr Martin Richardson is a highly experienced Consultant Bariatric and Upper Gastrointestinal Surgeon who qualified in medicine from the University of Edinburgh more than 30 years ago. He has dedicated much of his career to helping patients achieve significant improvements in their health and quality of life through advanced weight loss and minimally invasive surgical procedures.

Mr Richardson completed his general and specialist surgical training in Newcastle, Leeds and Glasgow before being appointed as an NHS Consultant Surgeon in Birmingham in 2003. Since then, he has specialised in laparoscopic, bariatric and upper gastrointestinal surgery, developing extensive expertise in the treatment of obesity and related health conditions. He has also worked with Transform Healthcare since 2008.

His clinical practice focuses on minimally invasive surgical and endoscopic procedures. While his earlier career included the treatment of oesophago-gastric cancer and benign upper gastrointestinal conditions, his primary focus is now metabolic and bariatric surgery. Having performed more than 5,000 weight loss procedures, Mr Richardson has particular expertise in laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy, gastric bypass surgery, gastric band surgery and revisional bariatric procedures.

Committed to continuous professional development, Mr Richardson regularly participates in international training courses, research collaborations and educational programmes to further enhance his knowledge and surgical expertise. He remains passionate about advancing the field of bariatric surgery and improving outcomes for patients undergoing weight loss treatment.

Alongside his clinical work, Mr Richardson has a strong interest in surgical quality, patient safety and clinical governance. As a Medical Director within one of the UK’s largest NHS hospital trusts, he plays an important role in driving improvements in patient outcomes and healthcare standards. He also brings this experience to his role as Medical Director for Bariatric Surgery, helping to ensure high standards of care across every stage of the patient journey.
