Mr Vittal Rao

Mr Vittal Rao is a Consultant Laparoscopic, Upper Gastrointestinal and Bariatric Surgeon with extensive experience in weight loss and upper gastrointestinal surgery. He specialises in procedures including gastric sleeve surgery, gastric bypass surgery, hernia repair and gallbladder removal surgery, helping patients achieve long-term improvements in their health and wellbeing through advanced minimally invasive techniques.

After obtaining his medical degree from the University of Kerala, Mr Rao worked in hospitals across India before relocating to the United Kingdom. He continued to build his surgical expertise, becoming a Specialist Registrar in Upper Gastrointestinal Surgery in 2009 before being appointed as a Consultant Surgeon at University Hospitals of North Midlands NHS Trust in 2013, a role he continues to hold today.

Committed to delivering the highest standards of care, Mr Rao regularly undertakes professional development and advanced surgical training to remain at the forefront of his specialty. Through exposure to the latest techniques and innovations in bariatric and laparoscopic surgery, he has developed advanced skills across a wide range of procedures that benefit patients seeking effective weight loss and gastrointestinal treatments.

Mr Rao is an active member of several professional organisations, including the British Obesity and Metabolic Surgery Society (BOMSS). He also contributes to medical research and has authored and co-authored numerous articles and publications within his specialist field.

Alongside his clinical practice, Mr Rao is passionate about education and surgical training. He is an Honorary Clinical Lecturer at Keele University, a Regional Surgical Advisor and member of the Surgical Specialty Board for the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh. He also teaches advanced laparoscopic techniques as faculty for courses delivered by the Royal College of Surgeons of England, supporting the development of future generations of surgeons. His broad experience across a variety of healthcare settings has shaped a patient-centred approach that places safety, quality and wellbeing at the heart of every treatment journey.
