What are the benefits of a chemical skin peel?

What are the benefits of a chemical skin peel?

Our skin is the ultimate multi-tasker. As the largest and fastest growing organ, it works overtime to protect us from external aggressors including bacteria, infection and of course, the harsh British weather! When our skin is healthy, it’s our biggest line of defence in preventing moisture loss, regulating our temperature and reacting to pressure placed on our bodies. However, for most of us, in our attempts to maintain a healthy status-quo, the importance of adequate skincare is often neglected.

By caring for your skin through suitable treatments and products you will be helping to maintain your skins overall health. On top of this, finding the right skincare can help slow down the ageing process, reducing lines and wrinkles, whilst resolving common problem skin issues including pigmentation, blemishes and ingrown hairs. Through my years of helping patients with their skin, one of my favourite treatments has to be the Chemical facial peel, the benefits of which I will discuss in this blog.

How can chemical peels help your skin?

Chemical peels utilise an acid base, which gently removes the top layer encouraging the process of cell renewal. Once the peel is applied to the skin, dead skin cells are removed in minutes and you are left with healthier, fresher and brighter looking skin. As an added bonus, skin peels can help your skin care products work more effectively, as the removal of dead skin cells allows the products to penetrate and be absorbed easily into your skin. What’s more, chemical peels can also prime the skin for being a better base for make-up to be applied.

Are chemical facial peels for everyone?

There are many types of chemical peels which can be customised to suit each person’s individual needs. An experienced practitioner will ensure that the peel they recommend for you is suitable for your skin colour, texture and needs.

Best peels for;

Sensitive skin: Epionce Lite Refresh Peel

Darker complexions: Obagi Blue Radiance Peel

Breakout skin types: Obagi Blue Radiance Peel or Epionce Corrective Peel

Combination skin: Epionce Lite Refresh Peel or Obagi Blue Radiance Peel

For anti-ageing: Epionce Lite Refresh Peel or Epionce Corrective Peel

What are the different types of chemical peels?

Chemical peels are generally categorised as mild, medium and deep. Mild peels including the Obaji Blue Radiance Peel do not penetrate below the epidermis (top layer of the skin). Medium peels such as TCA (trichloroacetic acid) reach the surface of the middle and thickest layer of the skin (the dermis) and deep peels including Phenol chemical peels reach the deeper levels of the dermis.

Our most popular: Obaji Blue Radiance Peel

The images below show the results of an Obaji Blue Radiance Peel. This peel has a low level of salicylic acid, a blend of lactic and glycolic acids and extra calming agents including Willow Bark and Liquorice Root which help to soothe the skin.

The aim of this peel is to infuse the skin with active ingredients which hydrate, correct, speed up cell renewal and improve the skins tone and texture. Over the first 2-3 days following the peel you may experience small areas of dry, flaky skin, but this can be covered with moisturiser and make up. By days 7-10 your skin will be fully healed and rejuvenated. For the best results, I would recommend having six peels over two week intervals.

Another firm favourite

I really love the Epionce Lite Peel: Refresh, which was formulated to improve the appearance and texture of the skin by increasing cell turnover. It contains Willow Bark known for its anti-bacterial and pore cleansing qualities. It also contains onion bulb which is anti-inflammatory and soothes the skin, whilst Quercetin (antioxidant) stimulates the production of collagen and elastin. This peel can be used on sensitive and acne prone skin types relieving congestion and brightening the skin.

Top Tip: The most important factor to remember when undergoing any chemical peel is to continue to protect your skin with a high SPF even in the autumn and winter months.
