ACCOUNTABILITIES

A.  MANAGEMENT ROLE

To assist the Theatre Manager in the day to day running of the theatre.

To occasionally deputise for the Theatre Manager in her absence.

To occasionally act as an effective shift co-ordinator where appropriate.

To promote the efficient and effective use of theatre resources.

Positively support Hospital policies, procedures, guidelines and initiatives.

To support the Theatre Manager in team building and the motivating and coaching of nursing associates.

To maintain nursing teams direction and cohesiveness through effective leadership.

To ensure high standards are promoted and maintained within the nursing team.

To ensure communication is optimised by promoting discussion and by attending theatre and hospital meetings.

To ensure communication with the consultants, anaesthetists and other customers is optimised.

To contribute to the performance review of Theatre Associates, ensuring that they develop in line with company policy.    

 B    THEATRE PRACTITIONER

To prepare for the operating list by laying out and checking all equipment required, and preparing the anaesthetic and operating rooms, making sure that all necessary equipment is available.

To work with, and assist the consultant in whichever speciality you are practicing, i.e. the anaesthetist or surgeon, in accordance with hospital policy.

Be involved with the maintenance of equipment by liaising with representatives or related specialist

To participate in on calls, weekend and evening duties as required by the department.

Be involved in the ordering of consumables as necessary.

Act as a positive role model.

Maintain a patient centred approach when planning care, involving patients, carers and members of the multi-disciplinary team in care decisions.

Implementation and ongoing review of the multidisciplinary care pathways.

Maintain high standards of evidence-based care where possible.

Identify and discuss nursing and patient problems, rationale and research with team members.

Reflect on and learn from own practice.

Contribute to monitoring activities and audit, give appropriate, timely feedback to colleagues.   

C    EDUCATOR ROLE

To supervise nursing associates in the delivery of patient care and in the maintenance of accurate patient records. Ensuring that all records are signed and dated, and then countersigned by you.

Assist in the orientation and training of new nursing staff.

D   PROFESSIONALISM

Abide by legal requirements and statutory rules relating to practice.

To maintain privacy, dignity and confidentiality at all times.

Take responsibility for personal and professional development.

Contribute to the continuing development of the unit.

Be constructive in comments and feedback to colleagues regarding personal and professional issues.

Be aware of national and local initiatives and issues that may impact on nursing.

Ensuring through safe working conditions the health, safety and welfare of all staff, colleagues, patients and visitors, and to comply at all times with health and safety policies and procedures.

Carrying out any other duty that reasonably falls within the general nature and level of responsibility of the post.
