Eyelid surgery, also called blepharoplasty or eye bag removal, is a cosmetic procedure that helps correct loose skin, excess fat and wrinkles in the lower eye area and upper eyelids.

As we age, the muscles around the eyes relax and the skin surrounding them loses elasticity, allowing eyebags to form. This can make the eyelids look puffy, wrinkled, and baggy. Aside from aging, puffiness around your eyes can also be caused by general lifestyle, a hereditary gene, your sleep routine, and diet.

Your surgeon and surgeon’s assistant will be happy to discuss any possible complications and give you detailed information, but, as a guide, they may include dry eye, red eye, optical changes and scarring.

How much does eyelid surgery cost?

Every patient’s procedure is different and is tailored specifically to their individual needs. As a result, eyelid costs can vary, but your surgeon assistant will be able to provide you with the cost of your treatment when we see you at your free consultation. It’s important to bear in mind that, although cost is of course an important factor in your final decision, it should be considered alongside other elements such as standards of care, patient safety and the surgeon’s experience.

How long will I have to stay in hospital?

You can usually leave the hospital the same day if you have either an upper or lower blepharoplasty. If you have both procedures, an overnight stay will probably be required.

What are the risks?

As with all surgical procedures, there are some risks attached such as bruising and infection, but we’ll fully explain these to you during your consultation so you can feel as confident and relaxed as possible before going ahead.

What is the recovery process?

You may feel some discomfort and irritation to begin with as the area will feel tight and swollen within the first 3 days following your procedure. However, we will provide you with pain relief during your hospital stay, and also give advice on how to manage your recovery at home. You can expect some swelling and bruising in the first couple of weeks, but this will go down in time.

How long will the results last?

Losing skin elasticity and muscle tone around the eyes is common as we get older, so it is important to understand that the ageing process will not stop even after the eyelid or eye lift. During your medical consultation, your surgeon will discuss the results you can expect to achieve.

What happens during the eye bag removal or eye lift surgery?

Cosmetic surgery to correct heavy, saggy or tired-looking eyelids is called upper blepharoplasty. The procedure removes excess skin and fat in the eyelids to provide tauter skin and help achieve a fresher looking eye area. Cosmetic surgery to correct bags under the eyes is called lower blepharoplasty. The procedure removes excess skin and fat in the area beneath the eyes, leaving skin tauter.

When will I be able to wear makeup?

We suggest you to wait a few weeks until the area has fully healed before wearing eye makeup. Your surgeon and nurse will be able to advise you on how the area is healing during your aftercare appointments.

Will I need to wear anything over my eyes after surgery?

No, although we do recommend wearing dark sunglasses for the first week after blepharoplasty surgery.

Your first appointment

The initial stage in your journey is to talk to your surgeon assistant over the phone. You’ll be able to talk to them about why you’re considering eyelid surgery, the likely costs and finance options, how much time you’ll probably need to take off work, and when you’d like to have the surgery if you do go ahead. Whenever you decide to book a surgery date, you can secure it for a minimum refundable deposit of £500. If you feel ready, we’ll then book you in for your free consultation with one of our surgeons.

Your surgical consultation

At your free consultation, your surgeon will ask you about the results you want to achieve from your surgery. There are several eye alteration procedures, and they tackle the upper eyelid, beneath the eyes, or both. Your surgeon will discuss the right surgery method for you and let you know the results you can realistically expect. This surgical consultation can be carried out either over video chat or in person at your local clinic. Our surgeons are extremely knowledgeable, and they’re happy to answer any questions you have. Your general health will also be assessed, and the surgeon will recommend the best course of treatment for you.

If you feel that you’d like to go ahead and book your surgery, they’ll then refer you to a clinic nurse who’ll perform some pre-operative tests and procedures.

The surgery

Eyelid surgery is a straightforward procedure that usually takes between one and three hours to complete, depending on the procedure(s) you choose. It is often carried out as a day case procedure, meaning that you won’t need to stay overnight. If you decide to have both and upper and lower lid surgery, then you may be kept overnight to recuperate.

You can opt for either upper eyelid, lower eyelid, or both:

Upper eyelid surgery

Your surgeon will let you know whether your upper eyelid surgery only requires the use of a local anaesthetic and a mild sedative, or if you’ll need general anaesthetic. During the operation, they will begin by making small incisions along the natural crease of the upper eyelid. Your skin will be very carefully separated from the underlying tissue, the fatty tissue will be removed, and the muscles tightened. Your skin will then be stretched appropriately to ensure result is smooth and free from lines and wrinkles. Finally, the surgeon will carefully close the incision with stitches.

Lower eyelid surgery

If you decide to go for a lower eyelid surgery, or a combination of both, this often be performed under general anaesthetic. Your surgeon will make an incision along the lower lash line before removing any excess fat, and your skin will be stretched to ensure a smooth finish. Excess skin will be removed, then the incision closed. You’ll be left with smoother, younger-looking skin underneath the eyes.

Recovery

Once the surgery has finished, we’ll be here to guide you through the recovery process and to help you recuperate quickly and safely. Before you go home, your nurse will talk to you about how to take care of your stitches. It’s important that the wounds are kept dry and the dressings are left intact. We’ll give you our 24/7 patient helpline number in case you feel you need to speak to a member of our clinical team, day or night.

It’s better to keep your head up whenever possible in order to reduce swelling, and it’s particularly helpful to sleep with extra pillows to keep your head raised for the first few days after surgery. It could help to hold a cold pack to your eyes to reduce the swelling, and you should try to wear sunglasses to protect your eyes from the sun and wind.

We’d recommend you take about a week off work, so that you can fully recover before returning to your usual everyday life. You should leave several weeks before doing any lifting, swimming or driving. If you usually wear contact lenses, you should use your glasses instead until your eyes have fully healed. You should also avoid smoking while you recover, as it can irritate your eyes and slows down the healing process.

Aftercare

Providing the highest quality aftercare is just as important as the surgery itself, so we’re on hand to support you following your treatment. Your eyes may feel sore initially, and you’ll probably want to take a few days off work whilst they begin to heal.
