What I wish I’d known before my nose job

When you’re considering nose surgery, there are lots of things to think about. You’ll do your research into possible surgeons, look at the payment plans available, and search for countless ‘before and after’ pictures. Most of your research will relate to planning for surgery, but what about afterwards?

Here, we share some tips for post-op recovery from rhinoplasty.

Keep it lubricated

Your surgeon may advise that you use a saline intranasal spray for your nose after rhinoplasty surgery. And as well as helping to combat flaking skin, keeping your nose tissue moistened (without wetting your dressing), will promote quicker healing.

Don’t blow your nose

Nose surgery can leave you feeling very congested, particularly in the first week while your splint and packing are still in place. You’ll have an urge to blow your nose like never before, but it’s imperative that you follow your surgeon’s advice on how long you should wait before grabbing the pocket tissues.

Wear zip up tops

Not necessarily something that you’d think of, but we’d always advise the wearing of loose or zip-up tops during your early stages of recovery. They’re much easier to put on, and you can completely avoid your mid facial area, minimising the risk of catching your new nose on a hood or toggle.

Be patient

Although a nose job takes just two hours to perform, the final results take a lot longer to show. As the months tick by after your rhinoplasty surgery, it’s normal to doubt the outcome. But before you go questioning your choice, bear in mind that it can take up to a year to see the full results of nose surgery.

Patient experience

Rhinoplasty patient Megan had her surgery 6 months ago, and she’s completely in love with her results. She feels much more comfortable and self-confident – so much so, that she’s cut back on the amount of makeup she wears, because she considers herself more naturally beautiful. We asked her what she wishes she’d known before surgery:

“That it would be such a breeze!” she smiles. “I was mentally prepared for the worst, in terms of pain for example, but it was nowhere near what I imagined. The whole things was a great experience, so I wish I'd known that I didn't need to worry so much after all.

“I also wish I'd known that my V shaped support pillow would still be in my life 6 months on, because it's just so comfortable!”
