Hair transplant

If you’re concerned about your hair thinning on top or a receding hairline, we offer two types of hair transplant surgery that could help to restore your hairline and your confidence in your appearance.

The way men experience hair loss is different for every individual, whether it’s the age they first start to experience hair loss or the speed at which hair thins or recedes. A hair transplant is a way of surgically taking healthy hair follicles from one area of your head and implanting them onto bald or thinning areas. This can help to restore the natural hairline and for some men could stop hair loss altogether.

Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT) involves taking an area of healthy hair and transplanting it onto an area of hair loss in order to stimulate hair growth. This is a good option for those looking to cover a wide area of hair loss. Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) involves taking individual hair follicles from the back of the scalp. Fine incisions are then made in the area of hair loss and the follicle is inserted. This can be a better method for those with early stage hair loss.

Hair transplant frequently asked questions

You’ll have the opportunity to ask your surgeon any questions as part of your consultation, but to start the ball rolling here are the answers to some that our patients most frequently ask.

Hair transplant FAQs

As a responsible provider of cosmetic surgery, we understand that each individual's procedure is different and will be tailored specifically around the patient. Because of this, we place a great deal of importance on our free face-to-face, no obligation consultations. Following our consultation process your patient advisor will provide a detailed pricing overview around the particular procedure. Please view our pricing and finance page to read more about our flexible credit options, available via our partnership with a specialist financial provider. More info here.

The hair transplant procedure can take from a few hours to a whole day, depending on the size of the hair graft needed to treat the area of hair loss. As all patients have different circumstances with varied health profiles, your surgeon will discuss which approach will work best for you.

Generally, this is a day care procedure so you can usually go home on the same day.

It is always possible that your hair may not grow as much as you want it to grow, usually in small areas. In this case, we can offer a second procedure but usually the results are positive.

The number of grafts depends on the area of the hair loss, which can range from a few hundred to a few thousand. It also depends on the donor hair and how much is available to graft from.

Hair is usually taken from the back of the head to the side above your ear, but it does depend on what the hair looks like and the amount of donor hair.

Local anaesthetic is used for hair transplant surgery. We also recommend a mild painkiller post-surgery to limit further post-op pain during the recovery period.

The FUT or ‘strip procedure’ is considered the most reliable and traditional procedure. We take a buck of your hair before closing the wound with stitches. The strip is dissected by a group of highly skilled technicians into smaller grafts. These smaller units or grafts are then transplanted into the area of hair loss.

The FUE procedure involves collecting follicles from the back of the head using a specialised punch and then expertly transplanting into the area of hair loss. The method of how the follicles are extracted from the donor site is what differentiates the FUE treatment from the FUT procedure.

We can never put the same number of hair grafts back that you had before, but our aim is to provide a natural look and increased density of hair follicles.

The recommendation for how to look after your hair differs for every person, but we advise that you avoid touching your hair or washing it for 48 hours after your surgery.

We advise patients to take one week off work post-surgery to help protect the hair follicles and get a better recovery.

How obvious it will be after the procedure depends on what your hair was like before. We advise those with longer hair to maintain a longer hair length so that they can hide their donor hair and recipient sites for longer during recovery.

Results can take about a year. Hair follicles should grow within 4 months, a hairline should be clearly visible at 6 months and by 12 months you should see significant hair density.

With FUT, we expect the scar to appear as a fine line or with a minor stretch mark. It can vary from 1 millimetre to a few millimetres wide.

The procedure is carried out under local anaesthetic. You can expect to experience tiredness and some discomfort following surgery.
