The hair transplant procedure can take from a few hours to a whole day, depending on the size of the hair graft needed to treat the area of hair loss. As all patients have different circumstances with varied health profiles, your surgeon will discuss which approach will work best for you.
Generally, this is a day care procedure so you can usually go home on the same day.
It is always possible that your hair may not grow as much as you want it to grow, usually in small areas. In this case, we can offer a second procedure but usually the results are positive.
The number of grafts depends on the area of the hair loss, which can range from a few hundred to a few thousand. It also depends on the donor hair and how much is available to graft from.
Hair is usually taken from the back of the head to the side above your ear, but it does depend on what the hair looks like and the amount of donor hair.
Local anaesthetic is used for hair transplant surgery. We also recommend a mild painkiller post-surgery to limit further post-op pain during the recovery period.
The FUT or ‘strip procedure’ is considered the most reliable and traditional procedure. We take a buck of your hair before closing the wound with stitches. The strip is dissected by a group of highly skilled technicians into smaller grafts. These smaller units or grafts are then transplanted into the area of hair loss.
The FUE procedure involves collecting follicles from the back of the head using a specialised punch and then expertly transplanting into the area of hair loss. The method of how the follicles are extracted from the donor site is what differentiates the FUE treatment from the FUT procedure.
We can never put the same number of hair grafts back that you had before, but our aim is to provide a natural look and increased density of hair follicles.
The recommendation for how to look after your hair differs for every person, but we advise that you avoid touching your hair or washing it for 48 hours after your surgery.
We advise patients to take one week off work post-surgery to help protect the hair follicles and get a better recovery.
How obvious it will be after the procedure depends on what your hair was like before. We advise those with longer hair to maintain a longer hair length so that they can hide their donor hair and recipient sites for longer during recovery.
Results can take about a year. Hair follicles should grow within 4 months, a hairline should be clearly visible at 6 months and by 12 months you should see significant hair density.
With FUT, we expect the scar to appear as a fine line or with a minor stretch mark. It can vary from 1 millimetre to a few millimetres wide.
