Mr Martin Richardson qualified in medicine over 30 years ago from the University of Edinburgh.

His general and specialist surgical training was undertaken in Newcastle, Leeds and Glasgow. He has been a consultant surgeon for the NHS in Birmingham since 2003; specialising in Laparoscopic, Bariatric and Upper Gastro-Intestinal procedures. He has additionally worked with Transform Hospital Group since 2008.

His clinical practice focuses on minimally invasive surgical and endoscopic procedures, originally split between oesophago-gastric cancer and benign upper gastrointestinal (GI) disease. Mr Richardson now concentrates on metabolic surgery due, he says, to “the profoundly positive impact on people’s quality of life”. He has performed over 5,000 weight loss procedures with a particular expertise in laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy, gastric bypass, gastric banding and revisional surgery. He continues to further his knowledge, research interests and proficiency through international courses and collaborations.

Mr Richardson has a keen interest in surgical quality and safety, including focusing on improving patient outcomes, which he continues to develop in his role as a medical director for one of the largest NHS hospital trusts in the country. He brings this experience and governance to Transform Hospital Group as the Medical Director for Bariatric Surgery.

Our surgeons are hand-picked for their advanced skillset and experience in their designated field. We never compromise in our patient care. All our surgeons work with us under practising privileges agreements and are registered with the General Medical Council (GMC), holding a Licence to Practice. Our surgeons have an annual appraisal and continue to develop professionally during their careers. Once every 5 years, all doctors go through a GMC revalidation process. They are granted Practising Privileges via our Clinical Governance and Compliance Committee, and they carry their own professional indemnity insurance.

While our surgeons and clinical teams have carried out thousands of procedures during their careers, they never forget that it may be your first. It’s our aim to make your experience as positive as your outcome after treatment.
