Mr Nijjar is a leading Upper GI and Bariatric Surgeon specialising in weight loss surgery, including gastric band, sleeve gastrectomy and gastric bypass.

Mr Nijjar qualified in medicine at the University of Birmingham over 20 years ago. He has trained in many of the NHS University Hospitals in the West Midlands, and he gained additional experience in heart and lung surgery in Liverpool. During his career he developed a keen interest in laparoscopic procedures, which has led him to perform the vast majority of his surgical work using keyhole surgery.

By furthering his experience in the UK, Europe, Japan and Australia, Mr Nijjar gained valuable specialist training with world leading surgeons and experts in the fields of upper gastrointestinal cancer, anti-reflux, gallbladder and weight loss surgery. He is currently head of the Upper Gastrointestinal (GI) and Bariatric Surgery Unit at University Hospitals Birmingham, where he has been working as a Consultant since 2009.

Mr Nijjar began working for The Hospital Group in 2014. He considers education and research to be an integral part of his clinical work, and contributed towards a collaborative study between the University of Birmingham and University College London, which culminated in a deeper understanding of oesophageal cancer.

Throughout his career, he has published several articles, and presented nationally and internationally about his specialist topics. A passionate and active Consultant Surgeon, he holds the position of Senior Academy Tutor at University of Birmingham and is involved in the training of medical students and future surgeons.

Our surgeons are hand-picked for their advanced skillset and experience in their designated field. We never compromise in our patient care. All our surgeons work with us under practising privileges agreements and are registered with the General Medical Council (GMC), holding a Licence to Practice. Our surgeons have an annual appraisal and continue to develop professionally during their careers. Once every 5 years, all doctors go through a GMC revalidation process. They are granted Practising Privileges via our Clinical Governance and Compliance Committee, and they carry their own professional indemnity insurance.
