Time to focus on you

Gastric bypass surgery is a procedure which helps achieve long term weight loss. If you’re suffering with obesity, have exhausted all methods of diet and exercise to manage your weight, and still have a body mass index (BMI) of 30 or over, a gastric bypass can help you lose 55-70% of your excess body weight within 12-18 months of surgery.

The procedure involves reconstructing the digestive system to change the way your stomach and intestines manage your food intake. The stomach is made smaller by creating a pouch that restricts the amount of food you can eat. It’ll also result in a reduction in hormones that make you feel hungry, and an increase in hormones that make you feel satisfied, reducing overall appetite. This can help you lose weight safely and effectively over time.

Shaping your future

Having gastric bypass surgery can help you to achieve your long-term weight loss goals. You may find that significant weight loss will lead to an increase in energy levels, better mobility, and a number of quality of life improvements, such as greater choice of clothing styles which would have felt uncomfortable previously.

Gastric bypass surgery has been known to aid the improvement of a number of weight-related health conditions, such as type 2 diabetes and hypertension.

Once you start to see the results from your procedure, you may be able to live a more active lifestyle with family and friends, and feel more confident in social situations because of your slimmer body.

Let’s delve into the detail

FAQ

Gastric bypass FAQs

More FAQs
How much does weight loss surgery cost?

The cost of gastric bypass surgery can vary, so we advise booking an appointment for your free consultation with our surgeon assistant to talk about cost.

What is gastric band surgery?
Gastric band surgery is a surgical procedure where a silicone band is fitted around the top part of the stomach to help reduce hunger and appetite, therefore reducing your food intake and eventually leading to long term weight loss. The procedure is best for those people who are suffering with obesity and have exhausted all other methods of weight loss.
What is gastric bypass surgery?
Gastric bypass surgery is designed to make the stomach smaller and bypass part of the intestine, so you absorb fewer calories. You may want to consider a gastric bypass when diet and exercise has proved unsuccessful and you’re still overweight. A gastric bypass is non-reversible.
What is gastric sleeve surgery?
Gastric sleeve surgery permanently removes a portion of the stomach, creating a sleeve or tube-like shape. The stomach is usually made smaller, meaning your portion sizes will be reduced and you’ll have a lower calorie intake to aid weight loss. A gastric sleeve is non-reversible.
What is the recovery process of weight loss surgery?
You’ll usually need to stay in hospital for 2 – 4 nights following your weight loss surgery, and your surgeon will let you know when you can return to work and regular activities. Any pain you might have after the operation will be treated with pain relief medication, and it’ll be important to take it easy in the first few weeks.

Next steps

We’re ready when you are

Your first appointment

The initial step is to talk to your surgeon assistant over the phone. You’ll be able to talk to them about why you’re considering gastric bypass surgery, the likely costs and finance options, how much time you’ll probably need to take off work, and when you’d like to have the surgery. Whenever you decide to book a surgery date, you can secure it for a minimum refundable deposit of £500. If you feel ready, we’ll book you an appointment for your free consultation with one of our specialist weight loss practitioners (a nurse or dietitian).

Your surgical consultation

At your free consultation, your specialist weight loss practitioner will ask you about your desired results from gastric bypass surgery. This is where you can discuss your personal goals, find out whether you’re a suitable candidate for surgery, and discover more about the possible benefits and risks, all with no obligation to go ahead. This consultation can be carried out either over video chat or in person at your local clinic. Our specialist weight loss practitioners have received extensive training from our surgeons. They’re extremely knowledgeable and are happy to answer all of your questions.

They’ll look at your medical history and discuss the outcome that you can anticipate, as well as any potential complications involved in the procedure. If you feel ready to go ahead and book your surgery, you’ll then have a separate consultation with your surgeon. They’ll go through the risks and benefits with you again and confirm your suitability for surgery, as well as answering any further questions you may have. You’ll then be referred to a clinic nurse and a dietitian for pre-operative tests and assessments.

The surgery

On the day of your surgery, you’ll meet with your surgeon so you can go through the consent form and ask any last-minute questions. You’ll also be introduced to the rest of your surgical team before going into theatre.

The procedure will take between 1-2 hours and will be carried out under general anaesthetic. Your surgeon will make 5 small keyhole incisions to insert the operating instruments, and use staples to divide your stomach to create a smaller upper section and a larger lower section. The top section of your stomach will be the pouch that the food you eat will go into – this will only hold about 1oz of food, meaning you’ll feel fuller, quicker. Then your surgeon will bypass a section of your small intestine and attach the newly created pouch. The food you eat will now travel from the pouch into a farther part of your small intestine, resulting in increase levels of hormones that make you feel satisfied and reduced levels of hormones that make you feel hungry.

Recovery

Following the procedure, you’ll usually stay in hospital for one to two nights. It’s expected that you’ll experience some swelling and pain when you wake up from surgery, so you’ll be provided with pain relief and looked after by our highly qualified nurses.

You may have a nasogastric tube inserted into your nose which goes down to your stomach to keep your new stomach pouch empty. This is usually taken out the following day. You’ll receive intravenous drip hydration immediately after surgery to maintain your fluid levels until you can drink. After your surgery, you’ll remain on fluids for a period of time – our surgeons and dietitians will advise further on post-operative nutrition and hydration.

Because the procedure is performed under a general anaesthetic, we advise that you arrange to have someone drive you home the next day, and they should stay with you until the effects of the anaesthetic have worn off.

Before you leave hospital we’ll talk to you about looking after yourself at home and make a follow-up appointment for you. We’ll give you the number for our 24/7 patient helpline so that you can speak to a member of our clinical team, day or night. Full recovery from the procedure is expected to take around 4-6 weeks.

Aftercare

We believe that the highest quality aftercare is just as important as the surgery itself, so we’re here to support you through the recovery. You’ll need to give your body plenty of time to heal, and we’ll give you detailed guidance on the best way to do this. The recovery period will differ from person to person, but we recommend taking around 2 weeks off work. You’ll need to avoid strenuous activity, intense exercise and heavy lifting for around 6 weeks.

The gastric bypass surgery itself is only the start of your journey. At Transform, we offer a full package of aftercare support to help you achieve your weight loss goals. You’ll enjoy ongoing support from our team of dietitians, who’ll provide guidance on diet, nutrition and lifestyle changes after your gastric bypass surgery. Our nursing team will monitor your healing process and advise on any medications you may need. The level of aftercare you receive will depend on the package you choose – and your surgeon assistant will help you find the right one for you. You can find out more about our packages on our website.
